I think you have to disconnect the battery and then press the brake peadl for five seconds. As far as the driving around to let the computer relearn, it can´t hurt. I´ve heard that you´re supposed to drive at highway speeds for a half hour, and I´ve heard that as long as you get through all of the gears and get to a respectable speed (whatever you think a respectable speed is).

yeah on my 95 LX the shift light is WAYYY too early... I usually shift at around 3500rpms or so, and even though I don´t have a tach I can generally feel where to shift.

I´ve heard that if you drive it hard like I do, then it will re-learn your shifting at a higher rpm or something. I´m afraid to mess with mine, because I´m getting about 41.3mpg highway (when I´m not driving like a maniac) and I can´t imagine it getting much better than that...

You know, I tore my gauge cluster out and I can see the shift light, but I dont have a bulb where its at. Does anyone have a GT with the working shift light?

You really only need to unhook it for a minute at least. It gives the capacitors a chance to burn out.

I wouldn´t think any GT would have a shift light because it has a tach. my Geo had one, I hated that damn light. I´m pretty sure that you disconnect the NEGATIVE terminal of the battery then press on the brakes for 15-30 seconds and then reconnect the batter, start the car up and drive around for a little bit. shift where you´ll normally shift at and drive like you will usually drive like, it´ll learn the fuel curve and whatnot for your style & driving habits.

I think James is right, 2nd gen gt´s didn´t come with a bulb for the shift light, but I don´t see why you couldn´t get one and put it in there if you wanted to. Personally I hate the stupid things (especially at night). I have one in my 87 egt and have been iclined more than once to take it out, but I am just too damn lazy.

Yeah I know its just a standard gauge cluster so its there for another use....but my friends jeep has one, and a tach....not that I would add the light. It would be on all the time....I like feeling the torque and using low throttle positions and high revs to spool the turbo.

my shift light goes off at like 2200rpm. it´s rediculously low. I personally shift at right around 3400. Nice smooth shifts and decent power too. I hate having the whole car shake when it can´t put out the torque at such a low gear. eech.

Disconnect the positive terminal on your battery and let the car sit for 15mins.
Reattach the cable and fire the car up.
Let it sit an idle for a few minutes before putting it in gear and driving off.
Once you first get going, the car may sputter and even stall out.
Don´t worry about. Just fire it up again and continue driving.
Important note: after resetting your ECU, DONT beat the shit out of the car.
Drive easy for at least a 1/2hr, then go about your normal driving patterns.

OK guys, I looked in my owners manual and it says right there that the LX has a shift light and the GT does not. I don´t think there´s a reason I just think it´s that way maybe because the motor is from another company and they don´t have it either or something like that. If you have a shift light that adapts to your driving, and I don´t know if the Escort´s does, it does so continually so there is no need to reset the computer to make it learn a new shift schedule.

none really... thanks for reviving a 3 year old thread. ;)

you should reset mainly if you've added something you think the ecu needs to adjust to, or if you think it's messed for any reason what so ever..

I've never had to reset, cuz the ecu basically always adjusts as it goes anyways... so it's kinda pointless.

the only time you'd want to reset is if the car has been running strange for a long time, and you correct the problem that was causing it not to run right. This will help the ECU retune the fule and spark maps faster.
