Hi all,

I'm replacing my ECU (computer) unit on my 97 Ford Escort (heater core leaked onto it).

Question: Do I need to reprogram the (used) ECU replacement unit? I am told that if I get an ECU from a 97 with similar specs, I probably wouldn't have to reprogram the replacement ECU.

If I find a used replacement ECU from 97 with the exact same part number, does that mean it comes from a car with the same specs, so that I don't have to reprogram the ECU unit?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I think 97 is the odd year out of the third gens. If you have an automatic transmission make sure you find one from an automatic car. The way to do it is to write the part number down off the top of your old one and find a match in the junk yard.

does that mean i can just order a used 97 unit online using the part number and it'll be coming from an automatic with similar specs to my escort?
