My daughter noticed the 94 1.9L manual was idling poorly. Since
it was due for a tune-up that's what I did. I also replaced several vacuum
hoses that were cracked. With time running short I just gave it back
to my Daughter and she resumed driving it.

After a week I drove it. Noticed the problem was still there. This
time I popped the hood and listened to the idle. Noticed a slight
random noise under the Valve Cover. The best way to describe it
was a random and varying pop. The noise correlated to the the near
stalling behavior. I knew right away what is was. Why didn't I simply
listen before to the engine. The bearing on the bottom of the Lifter
was sticking sometimes as the Cam lobe rotated across the bearing.

Had a small shop replace the Lifter ,using a spare I had laying around,
without pulling the head.

Idle Problem Solved! ....$50

Still most idle problems are due to the MAF, IAC valve, Vac leaks,
PCV system, needing Tune-up, or sometimes poor Eng
Compartment grounds. Now add Lifters to the list.

Where are the factory engine grounds? Ever since the same autox where I broke a motor mount my car has been searching for idle. I haven't thought too much about it, but I would like to fix it at some point.

My 99 2.0 SOHC has a nasty lifter tap at idle and the idle itself is horribly rough. I wonder if the noisy lifter is throwing things off enough that it's messing up the idle. Guess I should consider changing them out!
