When I try and downshift from 5 to 4 or 5 to 3 the car will not go into gear, to go from 5 to 3 or 4 I have to put the car into 2 then I can shift into 3 or 4. I am doing all of this with the clutch in I am not letting the clutch out. I have not been able to downshift into 4 for a few months now but 3 started doing it just a few days ago. Is this something I that I am going to have to worry about, becasue i only plan on have the car for at most 5 more months.

hop under the car, right around where the resonator is. You´ll see the shifter linkage rod. Check the bushings and such and make sure that you don´t have excessive play in the bushings and linkage. If that isn´t the problem, it sounds like you´ll have to take the tranny apart and replace worn out parts.

Can you double-clutch it into 4th or 3rd from 5th?

Pull it out of 5th, let the clutch out and rev the engine to where 4th or 3rd should be, throw the clutch again, slide it into gear, and then let the clutch out again. If slides into gear easily then.. then you´ve got some badly worn syncros. Have you ever replaced your tranny oil? You might want to drain it out and fill it with some synthetic tranny oil to see if that makes a difference.

If the double clutching works.. just keep doing that.. that´s the way it used to be done before syncros and is quite useful if you ever find yourself roadracing with a crashbox ;-)

when you´re upshifting do they do the same thing? it sounds like the synchros aren´t letting the gears mesh.

The upshifts are just fine.
