So I wanted a higher output alternator as I have a 96 with a 75 amp. I had a theory that I could take a 95 amp alt from a zx2 and swap the guts into the 96 alt.
I was going to try this t the junkyard but I thought it would difficult to get the pulley off in a yard. Then I remembered I had a spare alt from my 96 ranger 3.0 when I swapped to a 130 amp explorer one. After looking at the two they seemed the same except for the mounting points.

Long story short took the armature, windings, and regulator out of both then installed the ranger 3.0 guts into the escort case. The case is just a front and back half so not really hard at all. Only note is I had to clean some of the glue, or what ever it is that was on the lip of the windings to slide it in the case easier. Also used the voltage regulator from ranger as I figured it was worn to the ranger armature.

I have been driving with this hybrid alternator over a week now and all is good.

A How-To with pics would have been better.

No doubt there. I am just not the picture taking type. I just get so greasy that I don't dare touch my phone.

But rather simple though. Just take off pulley and regulator. Three bolts holding the housing together. A little tapping maybe needed to separate the windings from case. Then reverse.
I had to look online at tutorials for replacing bearings to see how the alt came apart myself.

I haven't done it but I've read that an alternator off a E150 Van will bolt onto a ZX2 and the alternator puts out around 130 amps.

That could be possible. The zx2 alternator looks like the alternator for the ranger in terms of the mounting tabs.
If I am remembering correctly the explorer alt I got was off of a 4.0 sohc, all the mounting was the same. The increase was from 95 to 130 amps with a visually larger case. So if zx2 is same as ranger then a larger one could bolt up.

Ok I found a pic on a ranger site

I am fairly sure that the ranger and zx2 alt are similar but it would be best to cross reference part numbers to be sure.
