In the Chilton's manual - it mentions both an o-ring and a distributor base mounting gasket when installing a distributor.

My car ('92 escort GT) has blue gasket maker between the distributor base and the cylinder head, not a formed gasket.

I phoned 2 mazda dealers, and both of them said there is no such gasket - the only thing the distributor had on it was the little rubber o-ring.

Any thoughts?

i'm going to be pulling the distributor to change the o-ring anyway, and if there is a proper gasket for the mounting base, i'd like to get one.

Anyone else seen a proper gasket on theirs or installed one themselves?

I know some places catagorize the O-ring as a gasket, so that might be where the confusion is happening. I can't recall ever seeing an actual gasket on any distributors that I can think of. It seems the gasket would tear easily if the timing was ever adjusted.

I just did this a few days ago. There is only an o-ring. Mine didn't have any sealant anywhere around the base or the outside edge. It was leaking past the o-ring under the distributor. I replaced the o-ring and no more oil leak.
