As I was driving my girlfriend towards the lake for an evening stroll my car finally kicked the bucket. My 95LX HB started making very loud grinding noises from the engine and died. It will start but the engine just makes a bunch of loud noises and dies again.

Instead of a beach stroll we got a nice bumpy ride in a tow truck back to my house.

Can anyone tell me what the going rate is for a engine swap? I can´t do it myself.

Check everything before you yank the mill.I had a starter not recoil once,I thought it was the tranny and I was gonna have to replace my transmission, but in a fit of rage I drove it anyway. It sounded like crap till the gear finally recoiled after like 20 miles on the freeway. Then there was a clunk and everything got better. So I slept in my car out in front of my work and when I went to get in after work and leave I found what the problem had been.15 minutes later with a starter I had pulled previously off of a parts car, I was on my way home.

If my timing belt broke would that cause the hesitated starting and very very loud grinding noises that I hear now? If so...how likely is it that Installing a new belt will fix the problem. Any chance of actually needing a new engine? My car has just over 100,000 miles on it and I have no idea if the timing belt was ever changed.

Doubt your timing belt broke. If it did, the valves would all just be sitting there in whatever position they were in when it broke. Don´t think car would start or run at all.

Sorry, no idea what IS wrong, but from what you describe, expect it´ll be cheaper to repair the engine you got than to replace it.
Good luck!

I dont know if your car is a 5speed or an auto, but; my friend here in town with the black EGT with blue graphics was getting a grinding sound and his car wouldn´t start and stuff, come to find out, the pilot bearing had seized onto the flywheel. He managed to get it fixed but the other night the scort left him stranded on the freeway because the tranny went.

If you know some peeps around you with basic automotive knowlege, an engine swap really isn´t hard to figure out. You will have to be resourceful and follow like a chiltons manual or something but dont count yourself out. If you plan on dropping a new 1.9 in maybe with a rebuilt head or something it could be easier then you think. But I would have a shop look at it to diagnose it first.

Well. I had my neighboor look at it today and he said the noise seems to be coming from the oil pump area around the timing belt or something like that.

I ended up having it towed over to a local auto shop where they´re gonna check it out. hopefully its not THAT bad.

UPDATE: Not Good At All

Well the shop called and said that one of the cylinders is shot and one of the pistons has a hole in it. They want $2000-$3000 to rebuild my engine. I´m lookin around for engines now to see if thats a better way to go. They´re going to give me an exact quote tomorrow.

Can someone tell me what most places charge to put in an engine for me if I can find a good one?

Also...if I just have them rebuild it do you think it will last? Its got 101k on it. or is a rebuilt engine basically brand new?

Nor Cal is where my car is...

anyways, looks like I´ll be purchasing my grandma´s Chevy Celebrity for $1000 so I have a car again.

In the mean time the escort will be hanging out by the side of the house while I work on some visual modifications and save for a SPI engine for it.
