I'm not sure if it's the fact that I can never get the search function to work on this forum, or maybe I'm just typing the wrong things into the search perameters... either way, I have a question:


If it's possible, how hard would it be to swap in a 90-92 dash into a 96? I hate the looks of the 93+ dash, with the stupid design and the airbag in the way... Is it just a bolt-in affair, or am I going to be needing brackets and more?




Or if this has been covered before, can someone shoot me the link?

dude the 1st gen scort dash wont remotely come close to fitting in a 2nd gen. the 91- 93 2nd gen doesnt have an airbag I have a 93 and didnt even have one on my steering wheel. 94 and up have the big rounded dash with the ugly flat airvents. You can look into tracers ( of same years 2nd gen) and if you really want to get crazy proteges and mx3s will fit but alot of rewiring.

91-94 all have the same dash, 94 got the driver side air bag, and 95-96 have the dual airbag setup. Just letting you know that if you get in to an accident and your insurance company finds out that you've removed the airbags,which will be listed on your insurance documents, they'll screw you and then drop you.. Maybe more depending on your state laws.

+1 on what Jinx said. Your insurance company WILL use it against you if you remove your air bag.

But if you do decide to do it anyway, the 91-94 Tracer dash is the way to go. It looks like a reverse of the Laser dash. That's what I swapped into my blue car(mine only had the drivers air bag, so no problem with me swapping it in).

Well let's start with the fact that I dont care about the insurance company. The car already doesnt have the auto belts or any of the airbags, along with a motor swap. So Im fucked either way with insurance if I crash (Its only got liability anyways, so who cares, right?)

Yes, I know a 1g dash isnt anywhere close. I meant to put 91-93.

I dont want the passenger airbag, nor do I want a driver's airbag. Hence one of the reasons I want to do the swap.

The 91-93 dash is the one I want... no airbags, and good looks. Will it bolt into the 96 with no issues and no extra wiring?

The drivers side airbag is in the steering wheel not the dash.. Only difference between 93 without steering wheel airbag and the 94 with steering wheel airbag, is the steering column cover panels and the gauge cluster surround.

Is that a 93 dash? It doesnt have a passenger airbag, but I cant tell by the pic if it has the flat area on the passenger's side like the 91-92. It look slike it might, but it still has the deforst section that I dislike...

I've never seen one like that before. Its like the duel airbag dash on the left but it has a shelf instead of an airbag on the passenger side. It must be a Tracer dash because the 93 Escort dash looks different than that.

it is a 91-94 tracer dash. I used to have the escort style, but didn't like the look. I like this one much better. I also have the cubbie bezel, which is getting hard to find:

Oddly the cubby looks big enough to fit my GReddy profec b-spec II and a perfect location for it. Mind measuring it if you got some time? Shame none of the dashes came without air vents...

Carl and Chad - I added that tag line several months ago, due to a situation that happened here on the board. I have almost modified it several times to add "present company included"... but I figure it is good as is.

Jinx - I will have to try to remember next time I am over at storage. We are trying to sell our house right now, so my blue car is taking up residence in a storage unit. I will say that the cubbie is removable. The AU Laser has a similar port, and it has a clock mounted in it. I had someone measure, and it seems that the clock should mount right up.

ARRGH. Why cant I get the best of both worlds? I like that right side, but the left side is the part that I hate.... the 91ish Escorts had a more flat look to it that I liked, with the curved air vents...

Is that Tracer dash a direct swap?

Hrmm... I may have to try that then, if the 91-93 dash wont swap in. At least that way I'll get 2/3 of what I want (No airbag, flat dash, but stuck with the crappy driver's section)

the 91-94 escort dash will swap in your car. I have had all 3 styles in my blue car(91-94 Escort, 95-96 Escort/Tracer, and the 91-94 Tracer.
