So I wanna put an arm rest in.
Kinda like this but less sophisticated (and maybe made from wood)

I was thinking to have it sit on top of the handbreak area inbetween the seats. The only problem is, I have no idea how to begin or what I'll need

Anyone have similar experiences or have any ideas on how I should start?

I made one up for another car, and may make up one for my Escorts as well. I used a chunk of 1 by 4 about a foot long. To hold it up I used two small sections of thin plywood sheet (like 3/8ths or 1/4") screwed to each side of the 1 by 4. So - the 1 by 4 was held level where I wanted my arm to have the support. I cut the two pieces of plywood in a shape to let me reach the handbrake under the horizontal 1 by 4. The 2 pieces of plywood were thus vertical, and parallel to each other, and rested on the carpet on each side of the handbrake mount. In between them at the top was the horizontal 1 by 4. I glued foam onto the top of the 1 by 4, and stapled fabric over that. Its been nice to have on long cross country drives, and can easily be pushed back out of the way if I need to.
