Commercial: "Don't Change your Oil"... says Mobile 1.
They show a bottle that says "Annual Oil Change Protection" 20,000 miles.

Umm... that's almost as bad as the commercial that claims that chemical/drug dependency is the same as a disease... like cancer. WTH...

Chemical drug dependency is a disease... Just ask any addict, or a drug counselor... Or anyone else who profits off of drug dependency...

um, no. These are choices. Try telling someone with AIDS or cancer that they can go through a 12-step program and they will be cured of it

They carry this new 20k-miles Mobil 1 Annual at Walmart, a 5-qt bottle for $49 something, compared with 15k-miles Mobil 1 Extended 5-qt bottle for $25 something. Mobil 1 20k-mile filters are $10.

The problem is every engine uses a bit of oil. My Escort need a qt every 4k miles, which is pretty good. Even newer cars need a qt every 5 to 6k miles. So that $50 5-qt bottle only gets you to 12k miles at best (1 qt bottles are $12). So what's the advantage and what's the point of using it, even if it does work as advertised?

before I got rid of my escort in 2011, it's required oil change was at 163k, I let it purously run over to 194k, just to prove to my boss that things were fine, they were and before the car left for the wreckers, pulled the head, dirty, but no gunk. and this was standard oil I used.

New cars do not need a quart every 5-6k.

Maybe some makes do but not as a general rule.

20k is entirely possible depending how and what you drive. Tolerances are tighter and commutes are longer than ever.

I hve column out on my keybord so I'm going to be missing certin letter.

We don't chnge our oil becuse it wers out. We chnge our oil becuse it gets dirty... DESPITE the oil filter. Dirt is very abrasive. A passenger vehicle gasoline automobile engine that has... (...oh, got my column back LoL...) 5 oil changes over 100k will be burning a lot more than 1qt over 4k miles. I'm sure Mobil 1 may like that, but I wouldn't.

I'm not a fan of consumer reports but they're right this time. Supports my assertion 100%.

    Germans are notoriously arrogant.

Doesn't matter what a dealership claims. They tried to tell me my bucking Focus transmission was normal. Doesn't make it true.

You can tell me I'm wasting my money as many times as you want. I'm still going to change my oil at regular intervals.

That said, I wonder how many fleets are going to switch to this with the promise of no maintenance. We'll see in a year or so how things hold up, I guess...

Oh I wouldn't go to 20k either. But 10k on synthetic isn't a stretch. 5k on dino is recommended in my vehicles' service manuals.

I wouldn't be surprised if the WH thinks that oil changes are a scam concocted by the EPA.

As long as the manufacturers stick to the 7,500 mile recommendation, I suspect fleet vehicles will still get their changes; at least while under warranty period.

Regardless of what type of oil is used, it still gets dirty. If it didn't, going 20k on quality dino wouldn't be an issue.
