I want to know what ignition coil I get for my 1.8 liter.
Is it the eec-iv type or just a reg MSD Blaster type.

But does it make a differance if I use a EEC-IV type or just a reg Coil?
I read somewhere that Fords used the EEC-IV type for the Escort GT and I know the one on my car looks like the one Accel makes which is a EEC-IV type.
Is this right?

What ever you do don´t use the round soda can looking coils. Most of them aren´t made for the newer ignition systems. Use the e-core type coils. They usually have less resistance, and perform better. I use the Blaster 2 on my mustang, but I have a full MSD ignition system on it. They put out Hella spark. I got bit by mine once, and it did suck. My whole damn arm went numb. A friend was crankin the engine while I was doing a compression test and Instead of unpluging the coil, I just yanked the coil wire off to disable the ignition. It threw a damn lightning bolt at my carb, then at my hand. I learned a little something there. I´m sure Accell and MSD both make after market EEC-IV coils, but what you really want to look for when buying a coil is the primary resistance, and the Turns Ratio. The turns ratio is the ratio between how many coils are on the primary side (power side) to how many turns are on the secondary side (Spark side). The higher the turns ratio, the more output the coil can give. Plus you want to tak into acount that if you do get a non EEC-IV coil, then you will have to do some wire cutting and spliceing to hook up your new coil.

By the way the Escort do use the EEC-IV coil. The exact same coil used in EEC-IV Mustangs, and basicly any other EEC-IC ford vehicle out there. I´m Pretty sure that holds true for the 1.8 concidering they aren´t really a true EEC-IV vehicle. They are technicly refered to as MECS-I (Mazda Engine Control Sytem - I, I believe) But it uses some of the same parts.

I know that both Accel and MSD have eec-IV type coils but all the places I´ve gone to get one at say that these 2 companies don´t make a coil for the 1.8ltr. so I don´t know if I should try it or not. Where would I get the info on the windings for primary an sec for both the stock and MSD/ Accel coils,.
Any Ideas?
Don´t want to cut any wires.

I just conversed to a guy at MSD through E-Mail yesterday and he told me they had a coil for my application. A 1.8 Liter 1995 Ford Escort is the info he went off of.

The part is a MSD Blaster TFI # PN8227 for Ford vehicles and just plugs into your stock coils connector. I just checked it and the connection is different, so back to the drawing board..

I thought I´d be an a$$ and told the guy to check into it again, because the connections don´t match and what you said.

Primary Resistance: 0.500 ohms
Secondary Resistance: 11.6K ohms

MSD specs for our cars:

MSD-8241

except that on at least half a dozen different cars ive had Accel coils go badon me after a year or two.. NEVER with an MSD.

the escort ignition system is still controlled by the EDIS module/whatever the hell the MECS uses..2000 volts isnt going to make a difference to us.

Don’t get me wrong, MSD puts out a much higher quality product than Accel (personal experience as well), but at almost 2x the price and slightly lower specs, its all in what you want. just laying out the options for reference. Does anyone else manufacture a EDIS coil that’s decent?

Whats the big deal, he gave out some interesting information, its more usefull now then it was before, everyones always bitching about people not searching, well sometimes old results come up, and its better to work with whats already been said then to startup a whole new topic.

I want msd so I found this very helpfull and was glad it was brought up after so long.
