This post is really about my transmission. I know all about the trick in tightening up the bolt for the shifter to the linkage, but when I shift into second it´s really hard to pull into it, and it´s only that way on 2nd gear. I´m thinking it´s gotta be the synchros don´t synchronize the gears right. My question is how much would it cost me to just rebuild JUST the synchronizers in my transmission? :-?

Mine does exactly the same when the car is cold, ie/first thing in the morning. I just go through neutral and "feel" it into second - mechanicman told me not to worry about it - he said that, in my case, there was nothing wrong with gearbox.

Yes but my car does it everytime going into second gear. Every time. :-Y

Second is the most common gear to go out in any car. Mine started doing it so I go 1-3-5 and that´s pretty much my driving pattern.

You can try new bushings and stuff, but synchros are part of the tranny...meaning you have to pull it and replace them with the tranny torn apart.

Reverse has no synchro on a lx (1.9) tranny that´s why it grinds reverse a lot.

hey bluski,
what do you mean about clutch placement? You talking about having the clutch fully depressed when you shift? Or are you talking about pedal free-play and stuff? Cause my second gear suxxorz. It is wicked far back in the shift throw, it almost hits the seat, and it a little bit nubby to get into... but the shifter linkage sucks too. Thinking about replacing the entire linkage with a custom jobbie.

i have the same problem with second gear but one thing that is weird is my clutch is hi, im almost not pressing on the clutch and it starts to get in gear, im mean it´s not slipping or anything I just have to release the pedal alot... Anyone know if there´s a ajustment i can do??

Reverse grinds too because the gears aren´t helical like 1st-5th, that also helps them mesh a lot easier, they´re straight teeth.

I wonder if I could find a junked GT in a yard and yank that transmission. Use that one when I rebuild the engine? :-? Rebuild these synchros instead and live with what I have for now. I still need to get a hold of a 1.8 Block, but I think I got one lined up from someone...road trip to Columbus!! :-]

Considering all the manual trans problems you guys are having, maybe I´m glad I have 2 automatics instead.... well not really, but I guess it does take the sting out a little bit.

I also found that one-two shift annoying so I installed a short-shifter (B&M in my case) and that helped. At least second isn´t in the trunk any more. But it still has to warmed up to be quick. I´d rather take my time than lose the synchros; my sympathies.
