Hey all! I have a question. I’m running a sub in my 93 escort LX and for simplicity’s sake I was hoping to run my remote power wire to the cigarette lighter, and just use a fuse tap kit, but before I do that I was wondering if the cigarette lighter is always on in these cars, or just on when the car’s on (or in accessory mode) if that makes sense. I plugged my little USB adapter in when the car was off, and it didn’t light up, so that’s a good sign. But then I also plugged it in in my explorer and it didn’t light up, so maybe it’s just bunk. Figured I’d check here rather than getting a new usb thing just to check that or just doing it and crossing my fingers. I’ve got a... lead checker? (Not sure of the name. Little device you use to check if wires are live or not) but it’s 110v-240v so none of the car wires light it up. Guess I’ve got some shopping to do

With the car off push in the lighter and see if it gets hot, if cold then switched power.

Oh I don’t actually have a lighter, I don’t smoke. No matter though! I just realized that I’m blind, and somehow didn’t see that there’s a radio fuse, so I’m just tapping that instead, because that feels like a better idea to me. Sorry to waste your time!

You know that I think of it, there really isn't really a reason to have lighters anymore. I think mine is just there to plug the hole, so I can understand not having one.

My old Subaru came with a little rubber dummy one, that was basically just a plug for the hole, and I always thought that was the neatest thing. Haven’t seen one since though.
