well i'm a noob to cars, and i just got a 96 merc tracer lts... so i was tryin to take apart my airbox, but half way thru, i had to go run an errand (so of course i had to put it back together) i didn't mess with anything other than pulling the plug on the MAF (or maybe it's a VAF? i dunno, tell me if you can) and then disconnecting the hose from the airbox. but now when i turn on the car, the check engine light turns on a couple of sec. after i turn it on... what can i do???

It means that you're car is about to self destuct if you don't do anything!!! OK, but seriously now... it's probably just an error because it was measuring too much air flow. That's what happened with mine when we had to start it part way through installing the CAI.
