After the 'Check Engine' light came on on my 97 escort I had a scanner connected which displayed the following code: 'P1443, MFG Specific DTC'. Does anyone know what this code means and what work needs to be performed?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I have a 97 LX Sport and the check engine light has been on ever since I got it back in may of 2001. It's gone for 23 thousand miles with that light on and it seems just fine to me. The mechanic said there is no problem but only the dealer can turn it off. I took it to the dealer and had them turn it off, they were pretty nice about it, did it for free, but 3 days later it turned on again. So I just decided to leave it. After a while you get used to it.

BTW That's the manual for a 1.8 GT Kahn's got the 2.0 SPI if it's a 97. Unless it's a ZX2 but I haven't heard about the engine light really ever coming on on a zx2. o.o
true that... i thought about that but anyway yeah i heard they can charge an arm and a leg to turn that stupid light off. Just scrap the car and get a 2 gen 1.8L IMO opinion i think they look better and you dont have to deal with that light  j/k just slap a piece of ducted tape over it and you wont have to deal with seeing it

Would that I could, FordBoy, would that I could... I hate the looks of the 3gen escorts but they grow on you after a while. Some of the girls think they're cute though. I guess maybe that's what ford was going for? A cute girly car? Anyways. I drove out to fenton a couple weeks ago and looked at a GT but the guy wanted 2 grand and it already had 250,000 miles on it. There really aren't that many GT's, so the next fastest thing is either a 3gen lx or a zx2, and zx2's are expensive... They had one at the dealer where my mom bought my car and they wanted 10 grand for it!!! So imma stick with what I got. Besides, there seem to be a few people out there who have them and know how to work that 2.0 SPI. Besides, I get 124 ft lbs of torque out of it! (I think that's how much). Anyways, I could always swap a zetec into it. At the end of this engine's life I'll probably end up doing that. I hear it's not /too/ hard, but you have to buy some fitting or something for the transmission. But by that time I might be in the market for a new transmission. Regardless, my car has served me well these past 2 years and I hope it continues to.

so going to that website it says "Small Or No Purge Flow Condition (Ford)" and isnt the purge like an overflow for the radiator? so check the coolant level i guess or you could reply and tell me that i sound like an idiot and that i need to shut up (or somewhere in between) maybe add some to the canister (not full... dont fill it because it has to have some room to grow) I think i remember hearing this in auto class so just break it to me easy if i sound dumb please PEACE!

Code 1443

PIMP ESCORT SAID
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

could you give a little more detail about your car and the problem that you are experiencing??? Did you clear the code after you replaced the parts?? My Girlfriends Echo had the Engine light come on and there were 3 codes all dealing with the EVAP system, turns out there was a vacuum hose that was disconnected. reconnected it, cleared the code and it never came back.
