On my third generation, the sensor is inside the coolant reservoir. This sensor has two prongs that get submerged into the water/coolant. Depending on how often you change the coolant or clean out (or don't clean out) the reservoir, these prongs can become VERY filthy. If your reservoir is coated in brown, these prongs probably are as well. Because of the grime that has built up around them, they will not make contact with anything. You should remove the sensor and give these little prongs a GOOD cleaning. Try to keep your coolant clean as well to prevent this happening again.

I have 3 2nd gen. Escorts, and the 'check coolant' light will come on now and then on two of them. The 3rd one is missing the sensor that sticks down intothe coolant. I have cleaned the sensors more than once. They are for sale new for about $70 - but Im not going to buy one. I think there is a transistor in the top of the sensor, which goes bad.
On my 92 Escort, I havent had to add any coolant in 3 years and 25,000 miles; so the coolant light doesnt bother me. I can just check the coolant now and then (once a week or so I usually look under the hood anyway).
I may rewire that indicator light to come on when the radiator fan is running - so it would at least do something useful.
