My GT sounds like it has the exact same problem. I actually took apart my resivoir tank and cleaned the electrode (it had a ton of gunk on it) and then put it all back together and I still had that same problem. As far as I know, the check coolant light is trigger by and only by that sensor in the overflow tank, but I know that I have plenty of coolant to immerse the electrode sensor thing in the overflow tank, so I too am miffed as to why it randomly comes on like yours.

I not only cleaned out the resivoir, but I also completely flushed the radiator when I did all this, and I still have the same problem with the check coolant light. Arg.

As for the burning smell, do you usually get that smell when you push the car hard (full throttle, high rpms) or even just at normal use?
