Everyone loves a car with performance. Everyone would love to put alot of money into a vehicle they love. Many people do not possess this money. I currently fall into this category, so I was wondering...are there any cheap methods, like $50 and less, that can make an improvement in the performance of our powerful Ford Escorts? If there are some, I'd like to know...my Escort could use a nice kick right now, just to make things nice and new..

here are a few. not too many can be applied for performace, but rice is cheaper. no wonder why everyone in my neighborhood has all this crap..

-clear corners $40
-rain guards $40
-headlight covers $40
-k&n air filter $34
-shift knob $20-40
-shift boot (dont know, dont have stick, pretty cheap i know  )
-aftermarket pedals $15-20
-floor mats $14-19
-xenon headlights $12.99-20
-cobra eyes $9.99-22
-seat covers $9.99-12
-spray paint interior components $11.50
-ummm, steeringwheel cover $5.99
-stickers/decals $1-5
-pine air freshener $1.99

suggestion: if i were you, i'd save your money for something major like rims or lowering springs or intake or something like that. it'll be more worth it than just spending $50 on an air freshener or steering wheel cover or whatever.

Airbox hacking.. it's free!!

Remove the spare tire & jack.. replace with a can of Fix-a-Flat and hope you don't have a sidewall blowout. (get a AAA membership for those bad times)

Lose the wheel covers (if you have them) and paint your steelies a dark grey or whatever color you want for that rally look. Expect to be laughed at by folks driving around with dubs.. but that laughter goes both ways. If you have alloys, paint them or polish them.

Upgrade your brake pads to some hi-performance mettalic ones.

Flush & bleed your brake hydraulics with DOT 5.1 fluid (or something else non-silicone based that 'exceeds DOT 4 specs')

Strip the interior (don't really).

Remove the power steering (less weight.. more power).

Remove the A/C.

Install urethane steering rack bushings.

Install urethane swaybar ends and radius bushings front and rear.

Remove the front swaybar altogether.

Install an Ractive rear strut brace (they're $45).

Detail the entire car.. a clean car always seems faster.
-------------------------------------------------------

Best upgrades when you have money:

Quickor 1" rear swaybar.

Sticky tires (obviously)

3 or 4 point Schroth DOT approved harness and/or supportive seats (you can't drive well when you're concentrating on staying in the seat)

SPI motor (into a 91-96 LX)

Turbo

Lower/stiffer springs & shocks

Similar effect as adding a bigger rear swaybar. It'll help to balance the car so that the outside rear tire is loaded when turning (less push, more turn). It translates to more roll, but it's cheap and gets the job done.

Ahhh, I see. I think I'll just keep my car as is for now, except for my system of course. Always adding to that in one way or another.

Besides, I think I'd rather keep the front one in, and just upgrade the rear, which I will probably do once I'm not broke any more.

Ram air can be done for the cost of a roll of duct tape and some flexible aluminum tubing from the hardware store.

As said above, lighten the car any way possible... drive with half a tank of gas or less, whatever it takes...

Keep your tires well inflated to decrease drag, keep the engine in good tune.

If equipped with a distributor, you could bump up the timing 2-3 degrees for a nice push... might have to run premium gas if there is any sign of preignition though. Can ruin an engine if not done carefully so know what you're doing!

If you can borrow a die grinder and some stones/carbide tips you could port the head for the cost of a new head gasket and bolts... but it definitely takes some patience.
