I want to take my black air conditioning vents out and paint them silver so that they match my pedals and wheels. I can't get them out though! The center ones are stuck, I got the side ones out but the center ones won't come out! I pried at them for like an hour and they won't pop out, they just get stuck, and now one of them is stuck sideways and I can't get it back to normal even. HELP! :?

It's okay peeps! I got it back to normal, if not out. The fix was no pretty and I don't imagine it was very pleasant for my girl. It involved a rubber hammer, a one inch wooden dowel that I found laying on the floor in my garage, and a very large fit of anger. Does anybody know how to get those things out without breaking them though? I don't wanna break them trying to get them out and have to go to a dealer and pay like a million dollars for a new one. My dad would kill me.

I don't really know anything on third gens but you might have to take the dash off or something. I have a feeling that i might have to do that to get the vent on the passenger side out........or i could always refer to my 93 escort cd

air vents on 3rd gen escorts

Ok here you go. The way I did mine was I took the dash apart Once you take that apart there will be 2 screws on the back of each one and you un-screw them and the pop out. As for takeing the dash apart it's not to hard. I think that there are like 5 screws in it and a lot of snaps. There are 2 screws hiding under the lower half of the dash or around the knee but the cover just pops down. hope this helps.

Even ifyou do break your dash piece, there are plenty at the junkyard. No need to go to the dealer and get hosed.

Well, the left and right ones just popped out without me having to take out any screws and the center ones are not screwed in. This is a third gen I'm talking about, for clarification, so it may be different on second gens. The center vents are just jammed in there very very hard. I am thinking about taking the dash off but am not sure about it. Anyways. Thanks for the advice, I'm gonna try it and see what happens. I'll keep you posted and I might have some pics eventually once I get the ones from my normal camera (I'm livin' in the dark ages, I don't have a digital, I have to get them put on cd's at the developer's.) developed. Catch ya later.

Hey, to get the vents out, take the skinnest flat head screw driver you can find and stick it between the vent and the dash on the side and pry on it, it will come out a little and and then go to the other side of the vent.

If that doesn't work take a coat hanger and bend it into a small hook shape and slide it in the vent and hook the vent and pull it out. ( its not goin to just slide right out so your going to have to pull on it pretty good)

Your Welcome, i hope that helped

Yeah thanks a lot. This is a really old post. I thought I'd never figure out how to get them out. I knew you could get them off without taking the entire dash off because the side ones came out without doing it. Haven't tried it yet on account of I was working on my friend's neon today (New INDY intake manifold and a bored out throttle body.) but I will try it tomorrow

It's an even older post now. Coyote, did you figure it out? I have a 98SE Wagon. I just want to get those leaves that are back there. I don't think prying out those things sounds healthy. It sounds like I'm going to have something break and then they won't stay in there correctly or turn right if I do it that way. I managed to take some leaves out with a pair of tweasers but there are larger leaf pieces back there that keep coming up to the vents when the blower starts up. If there are two screws back there, something's going to break. It may be that some have screws while others just pop out. I don't want to risk breaking anything.

Actually I kind of got over wanting to paint them. Go figure. I never did manage to get the center ones out, even with a hammer and screwdriver. I too now have tons of leaves in my AC from when it rains, and it makes an annoying clicking sound when I turn it one. Really gay. Good thing I don't use it too often. A friend suggested this to me: Try and get a high pressure air hose, figure out where the intake is for the AC, and just blast it. The leaves and stuff should be forced through the system and come out... I haven't tried it, though. I don't have a lot of time on my hands to fiddle with the car during the year. When I get out of school in a week or two I'll have more time to mess with it though.

All I can say is DARNED IT! No answer to the leaf problem. Yes, it's that annoying clicking/flapping sound that gets to me. Arggggghhhhh!!!!!
