Hey Everyone.

I was driving around my '97lx this past week, and my CEL came on. I took it over to the parts store to get the code pulled, and it came back with a "Catalyst efficiency below minimum tolerances (bank 1)". I then had them clear the code to turn off the light.

I havent had the light come back on, but I havent driven that many miles yet. Im just wondering if this means my cat is now shot, or if I need to just change out my O2 sensor(s). Has anyone dealt with this code before? The car still seems to be running fine, I just want to know if I need to start thinking about a new cat sometime soon.

I have a 2nd gen LX, so I don't even have that code. I'm not sure how much this will help, but here are a few possibilities in the order I'd suspect:
1. The sensor that throws the code is developing a short (catalytic converters are made to be extremely reliable so people aren't tempted to remove them at the first sign of trouble). Also, your catalyst should never wear out.
2. You may be running just a shade rich so that the molecular surfaces of your catalyst have fouled, particularly just after start-up before the engine is fully warm. Not enough to bring in a rich code, but enough to slowly degrade the usefulness of your catalyst.
3. The housing of your catalytic converter has a whole or flaw in it somehere allowing air and moisture in.

I can't imagine that your exhaust O2 sensor is at fault, even though I've had problems with two of mine. I'm assuming you have an additional sensor in your 97 that is downstream of the cat.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I didnt think my catalyst should run out, so I was a little curious. A few months ago I was having some trouble with a misfiring cylinder, so I do suppose that could have something to do with it. Ill keep driving it around and see if the code decides to come back on again.....

What's the code number? Generally speaking, they aren't Escort specific and you should be able to browse the newsgroups and get an answer.

Good suggestion.

I had a few minutes so, I looked around this site, because I remember someone posted a whole whack of codes once.

In the ENGINE TUNING forum, in a post titled, "I'm new here and I need help figuring out this code" KCZX2 asked a question about codes (posted Nov 23, 2003). Purple_gt responded with a dump of ten million codes.

The code message you provided does not exist on this list, but there are a few that are close, namely P0420, P0421, P0422 and P0423. I would guess that the code you received was P0420, but that's just a guess.

I'm curious about this, because I've never seen any catalyst codes before, so I'll snoop around and get back to you if I find anything.

Ok, I spent 15 minutes looking into this. Without knowing the 3rd gen at all, I'm sure the code you received was P0420. Check out the following link, about half way down the article, under Part D Catalyst Efficiency Monitor

You must have an second exhaust O2 sensor downstream of the cat, as suspected. The signal from it, combined with the signal of the exhaust O2 sensor upstream of the cat combine to determine efficiency. For the condition you described, the downstream O2 sensor signal was coming in more frequently than expected, so it brought in your CEL and the referenced trouble code. There's a bunch of possible causes listed in the article.

In your second entry, you mentioned you had a misfiring cylinder. That would do it. Do you still have problems with that cylinder? Are you burning any oil (ie through that cylinder)? There's a chance your downstream O2 sensor is on the way out, as guessed earlier, but this seems much less likely knowing you had a misfire condition.

Thanks for all the input everyone, I very much appreciate it.

I didnt actually get the code itself, but I can get it again next time I go to the garage (the CEL came on again today) Checking into that page that you linked to, I do believe that you have picked the correct code, the P0420. I really appreciate you looking around for me to help me figure this thing out...

In regards to the cylinder misfire, that problem is all taken care of (as far as I know....) I actually had a bad spark plug wire that was causing the problem under load, and eventually at idle as well. I replaced the spark plugs, the air filter, and the wires in order to solve that problem. However, before hand I did run several different fuel additives through the system, thinking that could have been the problem.

So, Im honestly hoping that it is an 02 sensor as opposed to my catalytic converter on the fritz..... I do know that I need a new muffler sometime in the near future, but I dont know if this would cause the problem or not. I do have 120k on the car, so perhaps the sensor(s) have conked out.

I really dont feel like having to replace my cat if that is in fact the problem...

I have only owned the car for about a year and a half so far, and I bought it with 101k (miles) on it. I havent changed out the O2 sensors ever, but I have replaced just about all of the other tune up items, I think.

Woah. Thats a lot of codes. Much thanks for posting them all.

Does anyone think that because I need to replace my muffler (its making a funky rattling noise...and the outside shell is rusted through) that could cause a problem with the cat? Im wondering if perhaps one of the internal baffles is rusted and causing a restriction or something like that.....

Hey there everyone.

First off, its one heck of a thread revivial. Secondly, my CEL problem seems to have just gone away. I ended up driving my car about an hour home on the highway in fourth gear instead of fifth, and I guess it just burned whatever was in my catalytic converter out of there. No problems since.

It all goes back to your misfiring cylinder. This allowed hydrocarbons to partially coat the catalyt bed, thus giving you the catalyst efficiency code. After you dealt with the misfire condition and ran it hot enough for long enough, you burned off the HCs in the cat and now your world is just a bowl of cherries.

Important Lesson: Fix Sh!t When It Breaks. One problem can cause others and soon you can't make any sense of it.

The corollary is equally important: If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It. You'll end up breaking other sh!t along the way.
