Anybody got any advice as to how to clean out the cat on the 91egt. Or if I was to do that how much difference in exhaust sound and performance it´ll give.

removing the internal of the cat will make a noticeable difference in exhaust tone and flow.
the flow will increase ,decrease , or donothing for engine performance deping upon if it is turbo or not and other mods that have been introduced to the engine

To actually "Clean" the cat......flush gun cleaner mixed with gasoline through it.

To ream out the cat....put a length of AirCraft cable in the chuck of a drill and feed it into the cat (with the cat off or in through the 02 sesor hole)
Then put it on High-speed and it will whip around and blow a lot of the stuff out.

Well, My next question. If it was to be emission tested after this was done would it pass? if not then what kind of fine or whatever would I get. (in Arizona) Thanks for the input though.

If you take the catalyst (platinum) out of the converter it will not pass emissions testing. In some states even if you fail a visual inspection you will be ticketed.

There are a range of penalties. However in Yavapai Co. (nothern AZ) there is no emissions testing, as of now. Alot of people in town believe Yavapai will adopt emissions testing within the next 2 years.

I have actually heard a rumor from a friend with an Apex´i SAFC that he could lean out his fuel flow so much he could pass smog with no cat-converter. However the car ran TERRIBLE, but hey if they dont see the fuel computer you simply drive away and go back to your old settings and pollute away.

Arizona isn´t as hard as CA thank goodness. A friend of mine said he drove his mid 90´s 350 Crapmero through with his EGR blocked off, and he passed even the visual. He also said he brought an older 70 something Chevy something or another with a huge biger than stock engine and hollowed out cats and he ran half a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the tank and it passed. As far as fines go, a first time failure will not result in any fines if you fix it within 60 days of the failed test, plus you will get a free retest if you bring back the failed smog report. I´m due this month, and they sent me a pamphlet. That´s where I got that info from. Any more questions go here

i punched out my wifes 92gt cat about 4 years ago, it was rattling inside. i got tired if hearing it so i removed it and punched it out.and put it back on. never had the money or the will to fix it. you know how that goes its the wifes car she don´t care. i live in pa. emissions testing is a big deal and it passed with flying colors every year. i would ask if it passed and they would say it runs clean as a wistle. i just make sure its tuned up good. gas milage droped a bit but not too much to worry about. some day i´ll get to replacing it, i´ve been saying that for years now. but if it works why mess with it

Hey imagine that.....I took off the cat to clean it out and it was clean as a whistle. I figured there was something different sounding about the exhaust that wasn´t quite stock but couldn´t figure it out till then. Oh, and the idiot that took it off last time stripped the nut so I just about had to use vise grips on it.
Thanx for the advice
