i have 91 egt auto,i start the car hit the brake but i cant shit gears into drive.the shifter wont move,what could be wrong????

Several things.I would first check the safetty switch on the pedal.then I would check the linkage between the selector safety switch and the shift lock,also you might jiggle the key as they have theft prevention integrated into the trans.last I would check the trans lnkage at the trans.set the brake chock the tires if nesescary and disconnect the linkage ant try to move it by hand.
