Throttle Position Sensor, it keeps your car from dying while at an idle. I have an lx (as you see in my sig  ). And mine is on the TB (throttle body) As yours probally is. It has three screws holding it in, And i belive three wires. Not sure on that, but im pretty sure its only three wires. And my car died once or twice like that, but then i did Cap, Rotor, Wires, Plugs, Filters. And it was all better after that. Anyother questions?

i had that exact same problem on my 94 tempo. that was a lemon. I dunno if an 85 would have it, but check and see if it has an ignition module(also known as a control module). That was my problem.

I am not too familiar woth the 89 model. But it sounds a lot like what happened to me a few months ago. some where near the top of the engine on the right side there might be a couple elbow shaped hoses going into your vacuum system. These are supposed to be reinforced elbow hose so they don't crush under the pressure but after that many years they can rot. Make sure they are not being crushed inward when the car is on. Also check if they have any holes. I had to continuosly give my car gas so it would idle when my hoses in my vacuum system developed holes in them. This is not an extremely hard problem to fix. In fact the hardest problem is finding those little reinforced hoses. I had to go to the dealership to get mine and I live in a big city with lots of auto parts stores.
