Just bough a 2000 se 4door. I cant remove the ing key because the switch wont turn to off (only gos to assessory) After removing the center shifter covers I found the gear shift lever assembly was not pushing a button in to release the key switch. I readjusted the button cable but its close to not working at full adjustment. After looking closer I see some shifter parts & assembley are bent. such as the shifter detent and button push plate. This looks like they were bent right from the factory new. Anybody found a simler problem? Any body have any photos of there shifter assembley so I can see what it should look like. Also in the shifter assembley there is two electrical part . . . one is a small limit switch which is the start lock out, the other is a larger 1"dia x 4" long round plunger ??question . . . what is the electic plunger for? I think its missing some small parts. thanks for any help. Don
I am just guessing but could it be the shift interlock solenoid? It keeps you from taking it out of park without the brake applied. Maybe things are bent because some previous owner tried to do just that, or something of that nature. Or tried to move the shifter without pressing the button(where you need to press it. Just talkin out my ass.
found the problem. For some unknown reason the detent plate was bent to the right about 10 degrees from verticial. I remove the plate, heated the two attchment taps, rebent the tabs to a perfect vertical alinment and everything els fail into place & worked perfect. thanks to all for this web site. Don
Next time, I'd recomment just a hammer and chisel, or pliers and just pull, oh, and make sure not to be gentle!
