I went for a sticker but the check engine light was on and speedometer is all over the place. Autozone pulled code PO500 (Speedsensor) Paid $90 and had it replaced. Brand new one. Brought it in again still showing the same code and tac is getting worse. use to stop at 50mph or jump now it just does not work.

1. Never use replacements on that kind of part specially sensors.
2. did you check the plug that goes to the sensor it self? Any chafed wire dirty or corroded contact.
3. check for lose ground wires.

Why not? Bad speedo sensor is a common problem on Escorts. Something must be wrong with the wiring or the plug. The only thing that will throw that code is a bad sensor or if the wire is disconnected from that sensor.

You say you bought a new speed sensor, "had it replaced" (presumably by a mechanic), and there's no change? Did you just fork over the money, drive away and expect the speedo to start working "real soon now" instead of immediately? Why didn't you turn around and ask why it wasn't fixed?

Also, did they clear the codes after the repair? Didn't anyone take the car out for a test drive?

Doesn't make sense.

Or was this a do-it-yourself project?

I took it by autozone and had the codes erased. but 2 hours later it came back on. Along with the tack, last night we lost the odometer counter. it just froze at its current miles.

They did something wrong when the speedo sensor was replaced or it wasn't replaced at all. The tach going out is strange, that signal goes directly from the computer to the gauge cluster.

Sounds like there's something more to it then, with the tach acting up at the same time. Look for a wiring issue in the main engine harness or under the dash, somewhere that the wiring for both of those goes through the same harness.
