The problem is that I can't get rear door open. Handle has been broken off from the outside and in the inside the handle doesn't work. Tried to press down the leaver, which is inside the door if you look the door from outside, but that doesn't work either. Any suggestions?

OK, broken FROM the OUTSIDE.... but the inside was NOT damaged? Meaning that the DIS-function on the inside is a RESULT of the outside damage? or was the inside DAMAGED also?

Do you happen to know if your car has child safety locks on the rear doors? You will probably have to remove the inside door panel and see what is going on in there.

Tell me what time you are typing the next post; trying to see the difference in time; when I was in Moscow the time difference was 9 or 10 hours. I'm in Colorado USA and it is not 1241pm, and in New York City it is 14:41, and in Los Angeles it is 1141am. I state this because there are LOTS of Mechanics on this site that will have good clues when they get home from work.

I know the outside door handle puts LOTS of pressure on the inside mechanism, so that little TINY thing that is STILL on the door is giving me some encouragement; do you have "Vise Grips" tools? a strong Pliers? I wonder [don't damage it] if you can grab THAT and pull out or up on it and see if that will open the door.

MAKE SURE that the manual door lock on that door is NOT LOCKED [smiling]. Then, of course, we have the "child lock" to contend with, as I know nothing about that. Our [my] American Escorts will NOT open from the inside IF THE MANUAL LOCK IS DOWN. That is why I mention that to you.

It seems to me that even tho the OUTSIDE handle is broken, it SHOULD be able to open from the INSIDE IF the manual lock is NOT locked.

Don't damage that outside thing when you make the attempt.

As I look again, I'm afraid you might tell me that the "thing" is NOT moveable, but is ATTACHED and RIGID................. so to everybody, WHAT does the door handle attach to MOVE the interior mechanism?

As I study your photo, it looks like the interior lock is DOWN? In our USA cars [mine] the lock is that height when it is LOCKED; when my car is NOT locked, it is much HIGHER than that; are you sure the interior knob is pulled UP?

Then perhaps the interior view by the door handle has the lock? the little button with a white dot on it? And white shows it to be UNlocked?

The black thing on the exterior

Hey, everybody, is that black remnant on the exterior view MOVEABLE or is it STATIONARY? Meaning, when the normal door handle is LIFTED, does the black thing move? or is it stationary? Because if that is the thing that moves WITH the handle, then he could pry UP on it with SOMETHING and open it [whan the interior lock is UN-locked, of course].

Is your battery charged? does your car run most every day? do the child locks work by vacuum or electricity?

The handle is connected to a small metal rod inside the door. I assume that black peice is held on with bolts inside the door so it may have to be drilled/ cut in order to access the metal rod inside the door.

lari i think what you see in the window is a reflection of something behind the car and not the lock. Child locks are simply a mechanicle lever on the door which prevents it from opening from the inside. If you were to open the rear door on your car and look on the end of the door where the door latches to the door jamb you will see a little lever.

My 1993 Owners Manual sheds light for ME [you guys prob already KNEW], but here is page 119.

If they are "set" the door cannot be opened from the INSIDE [of course, ha]............. BUT the doors can STILL BE OPENED from the outside WHEN THE LOCK KNOBS ARE RAISED................. [first dilemma; no door handle]

To set for child lock and to UN-set the child lock is the second dilemma; the door MUST BE OPEN.

So the "key" is to know if ANYTHING can be done from the outside with the "remnants".

On the interior view, what are those buttons behind the door handle? above the hand grip?

1993 LX SW

Duh, had mine since Jan 3 2006 and didn't know that mine had "child proof" locks, but no worry, it WAS set for 'CHILD PROOF"..

So now I see the problems;

Doubtful that there is any tiny little thing to GRAB or push from the outside, but maybe. I looked at mine.

Interior, with a cushion removed, I think he is on the way to reaching it. I'm gonna take photos of MINE and post them, and I think this is going to be a lesson oh not how to "break in" to our car, but how to "break out of" our own car.

I think a carefully bent piece of metal, hachsaw blade [do they bend?] will do it.

Maybe a Z bend, perhaps a compound Z bend.

If I had more time...................

If I had more time, I'd make a tool and go outside and try it, but I'm sure this will work.

Haynes Auto Manual asks to remove a lot of liner; I do NOT like to do that, and don't even know HOW. so here is what I'd do.

Do you have an old hack saw blade? or a thin strip of metal about 1.5 or 2.0 cm wide and perhaps 18-25 cm long?

Bend the end approx 3-4 cms at a 45-60 degree angle; insert this behind your door [I see you already removed your partial seat cushion : )] and insert this. Then move it up or down; see which way it needs to go by looking at your OTHER door. I should have done this but was in a hurry.

[Edit; due to Geometry; had my angle estimate reversed; I had said 30-45 degrees, it should be 45-60 degrees, but it's bendable, so trial and error is necessary]

Now if you move that up and down, you should feel your new tool hit the button, and push it the direction you want; practice on your OPEN door on the other side if you don't quite understand what I'm saying.

Now I'm aware that YOUR car might not be EXACTLY like my car, but this is a starter. How about a photo of YOUR car door Child Lock so I can see if it's the same? And that OTHER door is going to give you LOTS of good guidance as you try this tool.

My photobucket link DID work, so...................

Looks like the rats invaded my car in some of those photos; I try to keep it nice, but I carry tools, lumber, peoples JUNK and more and THAT is the result; it WAS nice and clean when I got it 4.5 yrs ago.

Hope that bent piece of steel works. If I had more time I would've made one, measured it, and then proofed it, THEN made the suggestion, but knowing WHAT we're fishing for, and WHERE it is will hopefully help.

The .................................... If you were to open the rear door on your car and look on the end of the door where the door latches to the door jamb you will see a little lever.

I never knew it. I went to my car "wondering", ha, wonder if I HAVE IT? and yip, just like you predicted, there it was.

All this after 4.5 yrs of ownership. Is my age showing? Only had grandkids in it ONCE in all that time [in car seats], and today I find that it HAS BEEN ALL THAT TIME set for "child safety"......... see, there ARE angels.
