Back story:
About two weeks ago, after taking a corner, i realized 2nd gear was two high, pushed in the clutch pedal. The car started making odd noises, so I pulled off on the side of the road and the car quit on me. after thinking the clutch disintegrated, we pulled the oil pan and found the number 4 rod had broke.

Now the car i was driving (98 se w/ a 5 spd) isn't the only escort i have. I have 2 91's (4d and 2d hatches) that both have auto's (yuck) and one has a bad head or headgasket. Then i have a 92 lx-e that runs and drives, but after an hour or so of driving, the transmission doesn't like going into gear and sometimes pops out of 5th. Plus going into 1st causes some grinding. Oh, and the body is extremely beat up.

Now i know the zetec is a very easy swap for the 98's and up (both have returnless style fuel systems) which i would like to do, but just don't have the money right now for another engine. However, I do have the running 1.9. So my question is how feasible would it be to swap the 1.9 into the 98? Could I keep the newer, better, SPI intake manifold and bigger injectors and run it off the 98 ecu? Is there something I'm not thinking about that makes this idea extremely dumb? (besides going to a much slower engine, that is) If you have any other idea let me know in here even if it mostly just thinking aloud. That's what this kinda is. At least i've thought about this enough, to not suggest swapping the return style fuel system mazda front end into my returnless style car ;)

The SPI intake manifold can not bolt up to the 1.9.
You'll have to modify the 1.9 fuel rail to only have a feed, and run the electronic FPR instead of the mechanical one.
You'll have a CEL from the lack of IMRC but it should run.
You should really run 19lb injectors so it matches the ECU. SPI injectors wont fit in the 1.9 fuel rail.

Gah, that's not what I wanted to hear. I think i'm just gonna have to drive the 91 and suffer though the automatic awesomeness for now. maybe wait on a zetec swap until christmas break or next summer. Unless a zetec or spi falls into my hands for dirt cheap now (which i don't see happening)

swap the 1.9 bottom end on to the 2.0 head (if the head made it) and turbo it.
