I've been wanting to get a hood scoop anyways (just because I like the look), and while i was thinking last night, i realized that there may be some benefits when i go turbo. It allows outside air in, which for the most part should be cooler than engine temps. So i think that this will help with keeping the engine cool, allowing more air into the engine bay to be charged, and also cooling the intake, for a last a bit of cool down before induction. All these reasons should add a bit of power, and keep the engine cooler for an easier/more efficent tune.

What do you guys think?

there are 2 ways a hood scoop, or a vented hood can be functional. The first is to vent it directly to your intake. Or you can leave it open, and basically just use it for air exchange in your engine bay, lowering underhood temps.

Wont see much gain, you should primarily consider it aesthetic.

Vented hood would be the most effective (ie. evo hood).

The hood is a low pressure area so it wouldn't force any air into the engine bay/intake so it would have no gains.

If a scoop were placed in a high pressure zone (ie. front of car) it would need proper sealed ducting to an intake to get any good effect.

My TurboCoupe has hood scoops that seal up against an above-engine intercooler. The intercooler was good for about 10HP compared to the previous model. It's still not as effective as front-mounting the intercooler to get "ram" air.

keep in mind when you are at full boost with a pimp setup your exhaust manifold and hotside are so hot that they will start to glow. (if you dont believe me go do a 4th gear max boost pull at night then pop your hood and check right after)

Now the loss of aerodynamics will probably make the car slower than faster. (but you would need to be a alien to notice on the butt dyno)

This is what i was going for. I've seen pictures of the glowing pipes and hotside, it kind of scares me, lol. And as far as the aerodynamics go, its a damn box on wheels, lol.

want a good exercise in design? compare an Evo 8/9 to an STI. the 8/9 has a CF pan behind the radiator and uses it to deflect the air that passes through the IC/radiator up and over the turbo to cool it, and out the hood. This does a bunch of things:

1. allows a cooling airstream an unimpeded path.
2. increases flow over the heat exchangers.
3. cools the turbo hotside.
4. at high speeds, generates downforce on the front end.
5. the collision between the air going over the hood, and the air passing through the vent deflect the airstream up some, so there is less pressure on the windshield, increasing aerodynamics. The stuff going through the radiator has to go somewhere, rather than burping it out under the car and creating lift, might as well use it to improve aero.

And that, boys and girls, is one of the many reasons the evo makes almost as much power as the STi, but with an engine 20% smaller, and is the big reason it handles and drives better than an STi.
