Being new here and to Escorts I have been doing a lot of reading.I will say the search feature really sucks, but I have found what I needed so far to do a auto to manual swap except for the information I need. How do I id a 5 speed trans for my 96 GT with the 1.8?

BTW here are a few pictures of my car.The trans has gotten screwy since I bought it and it's a little beat up on the outside, but a decent running car with almost 184,000 miles

Look for used trans in a JY. You could spend big bucks and get a reman from Jasper or something. The 1.8l trans' are different than the 1.9l, but I bet you knew that. I shipped in a low-mileage trans from OK through A-Z used auto parts. With shipping, I payed $300. I used syn. ATF and haven't had an issue. I got rid of my grind with a pedal adjustment. I put the travel slightly longer to push master and slave further. I no longer grind unless I am shifting too quickly or don't push clutch far enough. I can downshift into gears at very high RPMs without problems. I am talking about downshifting to 2nd at 75+. I don't allow the clutch to grab fully at those RPMs though.

I'm going to try a filter and trans fluid to see if it will work first. The fluid isn't burnt but has been changed in a long while before I got it.

I really don't see that helping. i'd get a trans manual and see if it is just a solenoid that can be reached around the valve body area. I'm just throwing that out, I an by no means a transmission guy.
