Last Monday i drove my car about 5 hours from Montana to Idaho and the car ran great. I drove it 2 more times that day everything fine but by the end it started hearing a clicking sound. Tuesday woke up and the car would not start. Checked spark and it had it. Tried putting fuel in the intake and still did not start. Then this morning it started but sounded really bad like a clanking sound of metal on metal coming from the motor. It was just about to die before i killed it, ran for about 30 seconds. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Pull the spark plugs and see if there's any damage to any of the electrodes. Sounds like it dropped a valve seat. In the meantime don't run it anymore, because if it is a dropped valve seat you'll likely just do more damage to the engine.

Looks like the little escort threw a rod. I dont feel like dropping another 2 grand in the car. Anyone want a parts car? Other than the motor the rest of the car is in great shape. Let me know

How you got the conclusion of a thrown rod, it very hard for that to happen on those engines, the head is the weak link. If you checked the plugs and found one to be smashed then it is a drop valve seat. Secondly if the plug all checked all OK, here's one question, is the sound present at cold idle temp hot idle, cold on at least 1500rpm, hot 1500rpm?

I found that on the last two engines I repaired (escort of course) they sounded like rods where damaged good and at the same time lifters heavily unloaded. After heavy diagnostics (inspecting rod caps, crankshaft, top end) which measured ok took of the oil pump (no low oil pressure indication on dash or diagnostic gauge) but took it off and check clearances and they were off but OFF, the pump internally was damaged by wear but still was producing enough pressure, replaced the pump and the engine was good as new. Even the idle was some what more stable.

And as everything checked I let it run with full 10W-30 synthetic oil.
