My wife's '97 Escort won't shift sometimes. Somedays it will and somedays it won't. On the days that it won't work, when you put it in OD it starts out in 3rd gear, it won't down shift or up shift. BUT... if you put it in L or D it will drive in those gears and when it's in D it'll down shift and up shift. At 60 mph in OD it tachs out 1,000 rpm higher than it should. I just recently had the tranny serviced, like 3 weeks ago, so that isn't the problem. I took it back to the mechanic who serviced it and he said that it might be a electronic shifting silonoid that isn't working properly all of the time. Any ideas?

BTW The car was doing this a little bit before we had the tranny serviced.

Thanks

Your torque converter might be failing.I am not too familiar with the 3rd gen tranny. My manual for my 96 says for your problem to check the valve body solenoid valves.Thats if you have the same 4eat trans that I do.

I am having a slightly simialr problem. The other day it tried taking off in third gear, would not shift out. But if I put it into D (or maybe it's low...it was the bottom one ;)) it would start in first. Only did it for a day though.
