When my 97 escort wgn is cold, I have to really rev up the engine to make the car move forward. It is as if the auto trans is not engaging. After it warms up everything is fine. Any suggestions

Thankx for the response. I have been searching the internet but can't seem to find much info on this switch. Is it something I can replace myself? If not any idea what the cost was?

IDK price, but it is located at the clutch pedal. IIRC it is a small white box with a plunger switch. It is testable, it should have continuity when plunger is pushed in. I would test a good one at a JY and save some cash.

clutch pedal? this is an automatic brother. the neutral safety switch is located on the top of the tranny.

Did you check the fluid level, and if so exactly how?

I'm thinking that you have low fluid and when it warm up, the fluid expands and it's enough (but just enough).

When you asked how I checked the levels, I got out the book and read the proper way. I have added some fluid now I will try it out if we get a cool morning again. I hope that's what it is. I will have to admit to stupidity but at least it won't cost me much.

OK, so if I understand you correctly, you looked up the proper way to check the fluid level (as in with the car warmed up and running after going through all the gears), then found the fluid level to be low. after saying D-oh!, you added some fluid, and now you feel foolish because that was probably it and it was so easy to fix. Correct?

As stupid as it sounds, it's actually quite common. Seriously. We get these threads all the time.

Ha, we always blame the women for not checking the oil, the tranny fluid, the PS fluid, not watching the oil pressure [when there's a gauge], and not noticing the "amps/boltage/charge" gauge............. but, since we don't wanna be sexist, we ignore it sometimes, too, ha.
