I just picked up the newest issue of HCI (Hot Compact & Inport) because they had an article about making your own turbo kit. The article is ok, it seem more about name droping than anything. It barely covers the functionality of the the parts, but more just mentions the parts and talks about companie who make them. Not to mention they seem to Hondas a lot. For anyone REALLY concidering building their own kit I recomend buying the book Maximum Boost by Corkey Bell. It covers every aspect of building a turbo kit as well as tip on installation.

Just out of curiosity, what would a simple, but nicely done, turbo install on the 1.8L BP do for the EGT number-wise? I know that they increase HP, but how about torque numbers?

I just want more pull in my EGT... when I´m flyin around corners I wish I had a little more pull coming out of the turn. I don´t know how the power is compared to stock though, I´d like to dyno it or time it in the 1/4 mile to see how I do. It just seems to have crappy low end torque.

Dude, if you want low end torque, get a Camaro or Mustang. The Escort GT was built for high end hp performance. If you´re going fly around corners like you do, downshift to put it into the power band while entering the corner.

Get yourself a small enough turbo so that lag won´t be an issue, and you´ll have some serious low end torque numbers (for a small engine). There´s always supercharging too :) Would make the GT feel like it´s got a grunting v-6 under the hood :-]

If he gets too small of a turbo then it won´t boost up until the 7k rpm redline. For low end torque the best way to go would be a custom built supercharger. But think about how difficult that would be. I mean the intake plenums are underneath the VICS plenum on the firewall side of the engine. :-o
That would be pretty damn sweet though. cutom supercharger. 14 psi boost. 210 lb ft torque...*drools* :-]

Too small a turbo will cause him to boost early, good for the low end but will run out of steam in the higher rpms. Example is the KKK turbo on the Audi A4. Conversely, too large a turbo is only good in the high rpms, because at that point, the motor is putting out enough spent gasses to spin the turbine. If Siragan wants low end, he needs a low to mid sized turbine that spools quickly, likely a ballbearing design.

Well I´m not turbo-ing my GT... it´s kinda rusty and I don´t see the point in dumping a lot of money into a rustbucket.

However, since 4-cyl, low displacement cars generally have higher HP numbers in proportion to their torque numbers, it seems like it would make more sense to setup a turbo that would spool up at around 3K rpm or so to help with the torque. The engine already puts out enough HP as far as I´m concerned. I don´t see the point in running an engine that would put out like 315HP and 150TQ.

Besides, I´m not driving at super high speeds, I just want an agile car that can weave through turns quickly and efficiently. I may autocross this summer, but I know for a fact that I enjoy driving the curvy backroads... :)

oh yeah and what is the difference between an intake manifold, and intake plenum, and intake runners?

low displacement 4 cyls can only have high hp ratings in comparison the torque if you balance it and let the engine wind it out to 8, 9 or 10k rpms. I hate it when people say "typical torqueless Honda" (BlackMX-3). Because it only SEEMS like it´s torqueless...the fact is if the engine didn´t wind out to 9k rpm on the S2000 then the torque wouldn´t seem so small compared to the hp rating (246 hp, 169 lb ft). I also hate it when people say "if they cut back on the redline that engine would be nothing" It makes me think, DUH...thank you for that obvious statement. That´s the reason why it can rev out to 9k rpm.
I wonder if I could end up doing a twin turbo setup on my car meanwhile balancing everything and seeing where I could re-set the redline to. Anyone think I could make my BPDT run out to 9k rpm? 240 hp N/A? Then think about if I turbo´d that. With a 9k rpm redline and a twin turbo... 350 hp, 300 lb ft torque on a 2300 lb car. :-o

I dunno I just picked up on the ´lingo´ the runners I thought were the pipes coming from the ´manifold´ into the head.
The ´manifold´ is where the VICS system is, right after the throttle body.

which is why LX´s rule!!! 20 more torque than hp stock! :-]
after intake and exhaust, my lx´s numbers may be a little different though...

Siragan: Intake manifold= Plenum+runners+monting flange. Plenum= Big area where all the air goes into after it passes the trottlebody. Runners= "tubes" coming off of plenum to the mounting flange that goes to the head.

Go find a car with a small turbo, than test drive it and you´ll see what we mean. I love to drive my friends 1.8T golf, it has a itty bitty turbo that spool´s at about idle :-]

If you pick up the book "maximum boost" in the end he shows a turbo install on a Mazda 1.8.

5/6psi for me: about 160-170hp (flywheel) and I´m guessing I´m somewhere close to 130ft-lbs at the fly again.

Best estimation at 5500´ over sea level I´m running mid 15.

when rob had the feb dyno day we had one gtx gt! it numbers were like 177hp and i think close to 180-190 torque, was pretty much stock with around 7-10lbs of boost! and gtx run 600-1000 for motor and turbo!

so damn wierd.. i was like.. i need to know more about turbo.. so i went to amazon.com and bought maximum boost.. NEVER heard of it before.. and know that i have it.. EVERYONE has it.. its REALLY awesome... explains EVERYTHING.
