Works for '97s for sure.
I think that even the newest 3rd gens (98+) that use electronic line pressure control instead of cable actuated pressure control still use this pressure relief piston.
Pretty sure that any 2nd or 3rd gen Escort can benefit from this.
Don't know about first gens.

If you're rebuilding a tranny, Transgo make a comprehensive 'shift kit'
that makes these trannys shift like butter. The real deal for a first rate job.
This comprehensive kit includes this improved piston.
Most of the other mods in the kit require tranny disassembly.

Bump from the dead, do I need to drop the cross member to do this?? I'm have a shop do the fluid and filter since I don't have the place to do it and they said they have to drop the cross member to do it.

I should also mention its for a 96 lx! Original thread is for a 91..

No. You just remove the drivers side front tire and it's right there. You might even be able to do it without removing the tires, I only had to because at the time because I only had a wrench that was the right size no socket.

I dont think a socket will fit on it, and a box end wrench wont either - unless its a very thin one. I used my grinder to put a flattened area on the backside of my box end wrench, so it would fit. That is for an F4EAT trans.

I'm pretty sure the 91 and the 96 use the same F4EAT Trans, at least I hope so because I bought this part zz recommended and I have a 96.

Also, did it leak a lot of AT fluid while replacing? Just curious if I need a few paper towels or an oil catch haha.

Its true the 91 and the 96 used the same transmission. No differences as far as I know. Take good care of the 'neutral safety switch' on the top of the trans, also known as the 'range sensor' Its a vital item, and they are expensive.
The trans did leak some. One thing I did before removal was to drop the pan and catch that oil. But at every stage of working on it, more fluid would be dribbling out. I think I used 5 rolls of paper towels during the rebuild.
Therefore - an oil catch pan, and paper towels.

Just to be absolutely sure.. the end with the holes in the sides goes in first? I just changed mine but the valve ended up falling out as I was putting the spring and bolt down so I didn't get the chance to see it's orientation.

I am fairly sure the end with the holes in it goes in first - the holes then being 'up'.

If it doesnt behave its not too hard to take out again and insert it the other way; even when the transmission is in the car and has fluid in it. You need about a 21mm wrench for the cover bolt, and there isnt enough room for a normal 21mm box end to fit, due to the flange that the oil pan fits onto. I took a 21 mm box end and ground away part of the thickness of the end of the 'box end' so I could slip it over that lid.

My wrench set stopped at 19mm but I think it was a 13/16" open ended wrench slid right on perfectly with less slop than wrenches normally have. It broke free without messing up the nut at all.

Reread my original post:
Note that the end with the hole in it goes into the pump first with the hole on the upper side (like shown).

If I understand you correctly, yours would be upside down!
