Does anyone know if the 3rd gen ever came with an armrest? The center console seems so low that maybe it should have had one but wasn't sure. If not, I'm thinking I will make one myself; so, if anyone already has, ideas or tips would be great!

I dont know about 3rd gens. both of my Escorts are 2nd gen. Neither has an armrest. Im thinking of making one up, using a couple of pieces of 1/4" or thinner plywood for the sides, with a wooden board for the top, having foam padding and a scrap of fabric over that - stapled to the board. It would need careful shaping of the plywood supports so I could still work the handbrake. I think I would make it about half an inch higher than the driver's door armrest.
I did this same kind of thing on my Dodge Omni years ago, and found it very comfy on day-long drives when on business trips around the Eastern states. It wasnt attached to the car, but just sat in place, slightly wedged between the seats and the shifter 'hump'. It could be tipped back if it was in the way (when I dropped anything down beside the seat).

some zx2's came with arm rests but there's not many of them out there. the ones that get pulled at junkyards usually sell for $100 or something crazy like that.

I was thinking that same thing on making one. Nothing too fancy but enough to do the job and make driving a little more comfortable. Not sure about the 2nd gens but the 3rd have a square shape cut out just before the hand brake that would be good to hold an armrest of some sort. I was thinking of using the matting they use in quilts and just doubling it or tripling it up so it wouldn't be too thick.

I'll check around at the junkyards too and see if I can find anything. Won't pay that much but who knows what the chances are....

if you find one at the yard, you should be able to get a reasonable price on it. if you find one for sale on the forums where people know what it is and how rare it is, it wont be cheap.

I know that Tom over on FEOA has one on his 97 Tracer sedan. I've searched junk yards for one, but have never seen one. Very hard to find.

yes. they are wicked rare though.

luckily my car came with one :)

heres what they look like

That's awesome! It seems so weird to see it though since mine has never had one. I would love to find one but now that I'm starting to think about it a little more, I'm leaning towards making one.... Projects are always fun! Anyone know of anybody making one?

I think they can be found on Ebay, Try searching for a ZX2 Armrest, the 3rd gen consoles are the same between the Z and the Sedan. However, IIRC the back cupholder gets deleted for the install. Not positive.
