Hi,
I was just desperately searching for some info on my girlfriends car. 87 Escort, FI, 1.9L. It has a condition where it will start up and run/idle smoothly for about 5 minutes then a bluish-grey exhaust will appear and 30 seconds later it quits. Then it won't start again for quite a while. When it does, the same thing happens.
Any thoughts?

taking a few shots at it here. My 89 LX has bad valve seals, and will puff out blue smoke (oil burning) for a minute or two if i dont hit the gas, just let it idle. Now your problem seems a little worse, so im thinking a messed up valve, or its not holdin compression. Or there is a chance where it could be a sensor or two going bad. Im not really sure, listen for noises, and pick up a haynes manual.

It runs smooth as silk when its goingn then abruptly stops and will not start again for hours. I'm no mechanic, but I have the Haynes manuel and I pretty much know my way around the insides of a car, but this one has me stumped.
Thanks for your thoughts tho. I will keep an ear out as far as different sensors go.

Do a compression check I bet one or two of the cylinders isn't holding the pressure anymore...probably just a piston ring.

Then take a look at your spark plugs, I bet they're dirty as all hell.
