Hey, I'm new to the site and just wondering what I can use with little effort form a beatup rusty 1989 GT donor, for my fairly clean 1990 2dr LX with a auto and a bad tranny?
I first thought a tranny switch would be good but to much trouble, then thought I could use the head, headers and intake, but read here that's not feaseble, so I guess its left to some suspension parts, header, seats and wheels huh? I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks

Welcome to the site.

So far you're on the right track. As long as your lx is a two door, everything body wise will work, ie bumpers (though the rears are the same), ground effects, sheet metal, and lights. Some parts would work on a sedan or wagon.

Suspension parts would swap over too, the sway bar in the front makes a big difference in the handling of the lx, you could do the rear also. The springs should be slightly different, but would still work. Front brakes are the same. The rear drums of the gt are 8 inch, and provided the lx is a coupe, the drums are 7 inch. You can use the gt wheels.

As far as internal engine goes, the cam and lifters are it (depending on the year of the lx, though Ford used the lx trim (in lieu of gl or l) from 88.5 when the cfi went to roller cams), unless you plan on swapping the entire motor and using the lx cfi setup. But of course you could swap the wiring from the gt , but then it would be easier to use the lx body on the gt. You could use the header on the lx. Also the alternator and starter would work on the lx. Various odds and ends would work too. The gt tranny has a slighty different gear ratio, but will work in the lx. Easy swap if the lx is a manual, a little harder if it's not.

If you plan on parting out the gt, let me know. I need some more parts

If the GT engine is good, just swap that in, and then change the wiring harness over. Also swap in the manual and pedal hanger. I vote for swapping in the larger GT rear brakes...I wasn't much of a fan for the 7" drums. The 8's have noticeably better stopping power.

I can vouch for the GT tranny working on the LX. I ran that on my car since I got it, and now I'm going to a Tempo sport tranny (easier for now). If you want a high geared transaxle, let me know, as I'm currently building one for my spare. I might swap it in, but I might sell it...don't know. I'd go for a good trade, too, of course.

If you do part that GT out, I'd be really interested in that cam...I've been trying to snag a roller for some time, but nobody seems to let them go :p. I vote for an engine swap, though, provided the GT engine is good.

Thanks guys, I am going to look at a 89 GT that might be as good or better than the LX, if so I'll be selling both the LX and GT all or possibly parts, it's bryond my capability to swap the engine and tranny, and would probably cost more than rebuiling the auto, and I on a very limited buget, so I'll let you know what I decide, thanks again.

Hey guys, well the swap would be to much work and might cost a bit to have someone else do and considering there's over 200,000 miles on the GT rebuilt 105,000 ago, I decided to have my lamo auto rebuilt a little over $1,300 2 year warranty, so I'm going to use the wheels and possibly the header, spoiler and sway bars if I can get them off ok, I thought about the intake but that looks like a lot of different parts to figure out, so the rest is up for grabs, but it's so rusty and both bumpers are broken or gone there isn't much to be desired, sorry I can't get pics up on here, PM me and I can email them to you but there's not much to look at LOL. so if there is anything you might want LMK and I'll see what I can do, BTW I'm in the great white north of Minneapolis Minnesota, so if it isn't to big or to far away I can ship, thanks guys.

I guess I finally figured out how to get pics ups, ain't she a bute? the guy I got it from is a big Ron Paul fan, and works for a sign co. hence all the graphics.

If you're going to the LX, swap in the entire suspension from the GT, along with the wheels. If it's a 2 door LX, swap in the GT rear brakes as well, since they're 1" larger in diameter. The GT intake will not fit the LX head properly. The bolts sort of line up, but the water port doesn't, and the air ports are pretty much hopelessly off. The HO exhaust header works fine, including the EGR tube. Swap in the GT seats if they're in better shape...they're lighter and more comfy imo.

Maybe slap in the GT's alternator, although it depends on the color sticker. Orange is the best, any other color means less amperage. If the LX already has this, just keep it. That's really about it as far as parts swapping is concerned. Good luck, and here's to that auto holding up (it should if it was rebuilt properly).
