    Hello all!

I have a 500w Craig amp in my trunk to power my PowerBass subwoofer. Several months ago I had my alternator replaced, and the mechanic told me I needed a capacitor or the amp could burn my alternator out again. Is this true, or can my 96LX handle the stress? I've never had a problem with the lights dimming or with the engine overheating, but I just want to make sure that I'm not overloading my system. Any tips or pointers?

Imo A cap would be a waist of money for the 500w you are running. Caps just dump power to your amp when a voltage drop occurs. Your lx should be able to handle it, have you done a big 3?

I have not. What is involved with a big three? Besides a stereo and a few small things my car is relatively unmodded.

500 watts shouldn't kill an alternator. you looking at about 40 amps of fusing. that shouldn't be enough to out work a stock car. what battery are you running? caps are lame! do as cheap said. big three it. but i doubt that is even really needed. not everyone is running around pushing 2500 watts rms *stab stab* lol im willing to bet your power wire to the amp is undersized and you have a stock 500cca battery.

Well I'm not sure the size of the battery, but it's been in there since before I bought the car. The power wire is 6 or 8 gauge I believe, and it hooks right to the battery. The mechanic also said the serpentine belt had been too tight, so he thinks over time it could have burnt out my alternator. Do you think a new battery would be worth the investment, or is my setup fine?

new battery is worth it. i hve had the same battery in 3 cars now. optima red top! will outlast most any car out there. mine is about 7 years old and starts fine every time. i have no light dimming and my car is running a 4ga main and about 500-600 watts. only about 300-350 of that is sub power the other part is for my door speakers.
