Am I crazy, or would I be able to get a decent rebuilt engine for under three grand (I'm talking V6 or V8 with an injection kit, swapped into my 88.5 LX)

And even if I could, what could I squeeze into an 88.5 LX? I want as much juice as I can come up with for under two or three grand (USD).

Any ideas? My interior and body work may be winding up soon, so I'd like to move on to muscle :)

Why, yes...yes you are crazy.

Did you plan on chopping your car to hell to make way for the engine, transmission and drive axle? The only way you're gonna get that engine in the Escort is by chopping it up to hell.

One this is for sure is that the Body work is only going to start when you move onto that type of muscle! Let alone how much of the interior just won't work when the floor is all chopped apart. Ugh!

Ok, scratch that idea. How hard is an EGT engine swap? I'm sure I can get an EGT engine around here somewhere. Do some performance mods on that, and I'll be happy. I just want a little extra power there when I need it (and an engine with several thousand fewer miles than my 108 k)

I've managed to find all the body panels I damaged my first year driving the car, with the exception of the rear bumper cover. I found the front cover, the right quarter panel, and the front right inner fender. I got all three for $35. I'm hoping to have all that swapped on to my car next week some time and paint it some time in August or September.

I'm a little concerned about the interior, though. I couldn't get a dash pad anywhere. I just put in new seat covers and a new steering wheel cover today (a big aesthetic and comfort improvement). I'm having no problems with the car, really, so I know it can hold out for another year or two. It just concerns me that I'm going to college nearly two hours from home. I know with my current engine, I couldn't make the trip very many times.

hmm... well intake and exhuast would help you out. I don't know how the heads are on a 1gen but porting it always helps.

are you sure your engine is in bad shape? It seems like everyone freaks out at 100K. its kind of one of those old wise tales. The best thing to do is get a compression check. if that is within spec then your engine is fine. you can take the head off and port and polish it... get it cleaned up and ready to be put back on. I'd be willing to look into port/polish it for you but I'm going out of town for a couple weeks. mid july I'll be able to start taking on projects like that.

Could any engine repair shop do a compression check for me?

I know 100k isn't necessarily the cutoff. I heard a guy on Car Talk (you HAVE to listen to this if you don't already!) talking about his 91 Escort and it had 198K on it and it was working just fine. The only thing that was wrong with it was the alternator--and it was the ORIGINAL!!!

Anywho, I'm checking out for the weekend. I'll be back on Monday morning to check my thread.

So, suppose I wanted to add an intake, how much am I looking at? (USD)

It'd be great if you could help me out on the engine, but there's just one thing. You're in AZ. I'm in IN. That's a long commute. :D

108K is nothing, it's just broken in. Have you had the car long? If you've been good about tune ups and such you'll be fine. The motor is my race car is a junkyard motor with over 100K. Not only do I race it (and drive it on the street), but because we only had one tow vehicle, I drove it to and from events. 1.5 - 3 hr each way.

Any good shop or even a dealer can run a compression and leakdown test for you. They are well worth the money IMO.

You can get a dash cover that will look OK and is much cheaper than a new dash pad (which is obsolete anyway)

I remember on EDRT back in the day, a guy dropped a V8 in a focus. Maybe you can hook up with him... maybe.

Why would it be slower? Not enough room for a good air intake or something? Or was that sarcastic...
