If i bought the adjustable cam gear from escortfocus and installed it on my car would i see any gains from advancing the timing say 2-4 degrees?

i have lots of headwork and a hotter cam with an adj. cam gear.

the stock cam doesnt have much room for improvment as far as adjusting it. retard it for higher end pull, advance it for huge gains in power and torque down low wihle sacrificing anything above 5000 rpm.

i dont subscribe to the 'all CVHs run best at -4" crap.. only place ive EVER seen that information was the EFP website.. and honestly, i dont like them much. what with their increased priced Crane cams and saying the HO header from a 1st gen wont fit a 2nd gen ... and oh ive got reasons.. i just dont take to heart much of anything that i read on their website.

i ran my cam gear at 6 degrees advance and i tell you what, i had massive low and mid rpm power.. car was a street monster. 0-30 was insane and 0-60 was equaly as impressive.

just had to modify my shift rpms.

i don't like them much either but on my car it holds true, though i do have a hotter cam than you do, and higher compression, and an SAFCII.....

yeah there cams are horribly overpriced. and im surprised that he hasent updated his info about the 1st gen header not fitting, i sent him several pictures of my old HO header on the car over a year ago, he responded apoligizing for the false information, saying he would try it himself.. though he obviously wasent motivated enough to actually change his website

jesus god, i had mine a 6 degrees advanced for about an hour *lol* my car ran like ass, with it retarded 4 degrees on my car it pulls like crazy from 3-6K, though my cam does have a .465 lift.....

don't get me wrong jason im not trying to rip your post apart and be an ass, (like i am most of the time 8) ) seriously though i respect your opinion more than most of the people on the escort boards, maybe cause your the only other guy that i know who had enough balls to build a 2nd gen 1.9L all motor like i did. just puttin in my 2 cents...

no its cool tristan. but our engines are alot more alike than one would think.

your cam is .465 lift, mine is .446 at the same duration IIRC. your CR is only about .3 higher than mine because you had like .055 taken off I only had .040, and I too am running an SAFCII because me fuel curves were all FUBAR.

i wonder why your engine ran so badly 6 degrees advanced while mine ran great. in fact, it was noticable, but really hard to tell much of a difference from 0 when i retarded my cam.

to answer some prev. questions.. i had every sort of head work you can do to a cylinder head done, with teh exception of larger valves, although i do have a 5 angle valve grind so it flows pretty gosh darn good.

pretty much: extrude honed intake, ported ports, chamferred valve throats, pocket porting on the CC, hi-po 5 angle valve grind, port matching to the intake and exhaust, .040 milled off the head.. .446" lift cam, dbl valve springs, high rev lifters, stainless retainers, etc..

no. and vtec would be same/similar as VVT-i or VCT.

they use solenoids and hydraulic units to actually switch to a second set of cam lobes with different specs. the actual valve timing stays the same, its lift and duration that change.
A big duh on my part...I could have done the research before I asked the question as opposed to after the fact.

Turns out, vtec incorporates different cam profiles, essentially cam changing, like you say.

VVT-i and the rest ARE just adjustable cam gears (cam phasing) controlled by a computer or whatnot, which can't change lift or duration.

vvti (PonyExpress)

i could be wrong but i was under the knowlege that vvti increased or decresed intake and exhaust valve timing, not using a completely different set of lobes. yes via a solenoid taped in to an oil galley or port have you. oil pressure is directed to a adjustable cam mechanism on the end of the cam shaft. then again it could be that i am just misinformed. vvti selects the ideal intake and exhaust valve overlap under all engine operating conditions.it eliminate the traditional compromise between low end torque and high rpm horsepower. it allso eliminates the need for the egr valve system. dont mean to bust your chops just know a little about it.
