I just got off the phone with a tech at Hires auto parts about My air conditioning. I'm thinking about getting it recharged & I asked him prices, he didn't have access to all the info he needed but roughly he told me that it'd be about $30 to check out the system, $60 to recharge it and $45 per POUND of freon to recharge it. So I have a question to Pimp or anyone with experience on AC systems, how much do our cars hold? 2, 3, 4 lbs of freon? I'm lookin roughly between 90 and 180 for the freon itself... 8O

But I know it's gonna be at least 100 + the freon itself to get my AC runnin cool. The only reason I'm thinking about this is because it shot up to 90 degrees last week and has stayed there consistantly for the entire week, today was no exception...92 degrees (quiet you Arizonians! :D )

He also told me that the R12 runs colder than the newer freon (R132 I think??) so it'd really be pros vs pros on getting it switched to the new system.

I can run it cooler for cheaper or run it without destroying the earth and be a tad bit warmer for extra money? I think you all know what I'm thinking on that one.

The best cooling method is to run without AC with the windows down. It's both free and envoronmentally sound! Press your right foot down on the gas pedal and you'll be fine. ;p You don't need AC.

well then coyote, in the case of September of 00 when I was in St Louis for a few hours (went up the arch, very very cool btw). It was 114 degrees in the shade. hot, fast moving air does not feel very good at all. I'd rather make do with slightly less mpg and colder air :D
Besides that, I have a system now, and my amp has already crapped out on me a few times when it's gotten too hot, so I'd like to keep it as cool as possible. :)

Thanks for the complement on the city. ;p Too bad I didn't build it. Yeah here AC becomes a must unless you're like me and like to sweat with the windows down. (I really can't stand the loss in horsepower so I never turn it on. I was once even caught driving with the heater on when it was like 98 degrees to keep my engine cooler. Not sure if it helped or not. The only reason why my AC is even still in the car is that my mom and dad can't stand doing without it.) My mom's AC broke on her car 3 times in the summer of '01 (POS Saturn) and she couldn't stand it. Oh shoot... the amp? Hmm... I have a friend down in texas who says he uses a liquid cooled system of some sort on his. But yeah I was just joshin' ya. If you have an uncle who's an auto tech teacher you can get it recharged for free. :toothy7: And I'm workin' on trying to find out. I drive a 3 gen so I don't know if mine is the same or not. My uncle didn't know, and the dealer kind of blew me off. I called a friend of mine who's in school for diesels but is a ford guru and he told me escorts were pieces and get a mustang and he thinks three pounds. He wasn't sure though because he's never worked on one.

no prob. St louis is an absolutely gorgeous city (i love architecture). We stayed the night in the Adams Mark hotel and then headed home the next day. it was 113 when we left the city, and when we got back home it was 62 degrees...half the temp i was used to, I was freezin my butt off lol

Anyway, I was guessing it was 3 lbs myself. With the windows down I can stand these temps, but i have to be moving quickly. at 35 mph it doesn't help at all to have the windows down. I don't want to add anymore weight than I already did with my amp/sub. AC would be easier.

um,...

Chances are your lines are bad. You can buy new lines for about 100-130 bucks. The compressor usually doesn't die as long as you haven't left it sitting and screwed up the seals. Likewise, the heat exchanger usually stays good too.

If you recharge and leak after a few weeks... look into getting the lines replaced, or if you are like me, replace them yourself, even though it can be dangerous and you will probably screw it up, but it's better than paying some bastard to do it.

James about your amp...the cheapest thing to do is get your self a fan...not a huge fan. like one in a cpu. something like that to keep it cool. it worked on my brothers when he went to arizona in his festiva a year in a half ago. but being without ac sucks, but im just gonna have to deal with it till next weekend...when my uncle does it for a subway sandwhich...lol

um... that can be very expensive. Depending on the condition of your GT, you may want to consider selling it and getting a "better" one. Just keepin it real.
Yeah. Right. have you seen my f'in GT? I'm not you I can't afford to own 4 f'in cars.
Would you buy a car with bad cv joints, a stuttering engine and no AC with huge rust spots? Well, you'd buy anything. but no one else would. Keep those comments to yourself. you're no better than my ass of a brother with crap like that coming out of your head.

Another thing, how will selling it and getting another one be any better? I've already been threw a broken timing belt, blown clutch, broken taillight and a reworked head. Wait...here's an idea James, sell what you've put $6000 into and buy another one, then go ahead and dump $6000 into it and be right back where you started, all to save on $400 dollars worth of AC work. :? wtf?

I'm sorry but he sounded exactly like my brother with that post and that pisses me off even more because my brother is the least understanding ass clown out there. If he didn't say it, it's either stupid, or it doesn't even make sense. The fact that I own my own car and he doesn't even get to drive his should make him shut up but it doesn't. I don't need another Escort owner telling me I should just sell mine and buy another one. That's the pot calling the kettle black since all he does is complain about his rusty one.

Well my 94EGT runs R134a. The A/C performance is the only thing i have been truly disappointed with in the 8 years of ownership of my escort. It cools poorly, particularly if it gets into the 90's which is daily from late April to October in Texas. For instance today it was 96 and i had to have the A/C on full the whole time for it to barely keep it comfortable. I've had my mechanic check it out a couple of times but he can't find any thing wrong with the system. If R134a is what you're set-up for that should be fine in Indiana though?
