The zx2 tranny will work if you grab the flywheel from the zx2.

NO, the zx2 ecu won't run the spi motor. You need the ecu from a 98+ escort with a manual transmission. If you don't have it you will get a CE light because the computer can't find the auto tranny. I have herd that you need the zx2 flywheel bolts to use the zx2 flywheel.
I think ryanrules swapped a zx2 tranny into an spi. You could ask him.

FYI, the Zetec trans is a direct bolt in. I just used an SPI flywheel. All the rest of the parts have no fitment issues whatsoever. There was a lower bolt that didn't line up with the oil pan hole but I just drilled a new hole and called it a day :D

Brad was prob the first guy to drop in a zetec tanny. You do not NEED A ZX2 flywheel. The thing with the spi/zetec tranny, you can use the 1.9,2.0spi or zx2 clutch tranny with it. you cannot use the spi/zx2 clutch flywheel with the 1.9 tranny becasue the tranny is smaller in size.

While it is true that the Mazda tranny will bolt into an escort frame it won't bolt to the motor because it is a Ford. Internally the trans is a Mazda but its in a housing designed to fit the Ford motor. The only situation were it would work is if you had a GT which has a Mazda motor.

check www.clubprotege.com ,but im sure its diferent. madmatt2024, he has a spi, not gt/bp here. He cannot use any mazda tranny, you can use a zetec tranny, just use the spi starter and flywheel or the zx2 fly and zx2 starter. You will be fine.
