Does anyone know if an engine from a 98 Ford Contour will fit a 98 Ford Escort? The Contour is a 4 cyl. I'm just not sure if everything will line up, if it use's the same sensor's, etc...??? I have the contour, runs good but needs a tranny, I have a chance to buy the escort for cheap, but from talking w/ the owner it sound's like the engine's toast. So is this swap worth doing?

The Zetec in the Contour is the same motor as in the ZX2, so maybe with a ZX2's computer and wiring harness, along with motor mounts, it should work fine in a sedan. I don't know if the bolt pattern of the trans is the same though, might need a ZX2's trans. The swap would be a lot easier with a ZX2 available to grab parts from.

The Zetec is different than the SPI though, and the timing belt is a critical part of keeping the Zetec running. If the belt breaks, the cylinder head will most likely be junk because the pistons will bend the valves. If you do this swap, make sure to change the timing belt before putting the motor in, and make sure you set the timing of the belt properly, use a shop manual to get it right on.

the zetec is a non-interference motor. if the timing belt goes, it does no damage.
