Hey guys, I bought a gently used (202K) 97 Escort LX sedan. Somebody upgraded the head unit, but the speakers sound extremely tinny and have no bass at all in them. I'm wanting to replace all 4 speakers, how do I get the door panel off? I found two plastic rivets and successfully got those off, but I'm having trouble with the window crank. I can't find this U clip everyone keeps talking about. But after that, the rest of the panel just pops off, right? And then I lift up and over the plastic lock nubbin?
    Help would be much appreciated.

you will need a pick with a hook or a properly bent paperclip. the clip you need is going to be on the cranks back side. the part you need to hook and pull on will be on the non-handle end between the crank and the plastic washer. simple hook it and pull. as for the rest of the door i am not sure because i have not worked on a 3rd gen.

I take an old rag and slide it under the window crank handle until I hit the middle and pull it back and forth to remove the clip. hard to explain, easy to do.

After you get that clip off, there will be two screws in the door. One inside the pull pocket and the other behind the inside handle hidden by a plastic cover.

I do it with my t-shirt when I wear specific "junkyard clothing"

I did it with a nice shirt once and ripped it.

Thanks for all the help guys, I successfully got the new speakers installed, though it was kind of annoying to have to drill new mounting holes... Anyways, the door panels keep popping off at the back bottom. I just use a little bit of force to pop them back on, but is there a way to get them more permanently on there like they were before?

If it's anything like my 1995, I really hate taking off the door panels because it's really just a piece of cardboard held on my plastic push pins. If you somehow managed to remove the panel without damaging the cardboard, and just mangled up the plastic push pins, then yes you can get new plastic push pins.

The third gens are just plastic pieces. If some of the snaps are damaged they won't go on correctly. Also if the speakers are too tall they can push out on the door panel.
