My son's 97 2.0 AT is driving me nuts....Here are the symptoms, and what we have done so far with no results.

1.Car will intermittently miss and throw a p0304 code. #4 misfire.
2. Car starts normally (cold) but after a run and shut down it will, on occasion idle rough accompanied by steam around the front of the engine.
3. Yes, there is a small amount of coolant loss.

I feared that it may be head gasket, and it still may be, however, the there is no water in the oil, no steam comming out of the tailpipe, and all cylinders compression check at 180 psi. It seems to me that if there was a leaking head gasket, it would give me one of the three things listed above. I know there can be a leak between the waterjacket and the outside of the engine, but that should create steam every time it is restarted after being warmed up to temp.

What is driving me nuts is that it is intermittent.

We pulled the exaust header shroud and of course, it wouldn't duplicate the problem when we had a good view.

I'm now thinking that it may be the radiator inlet hose. That hose is in close proximity to the exhaust header. A slight pin hole in that hose could cause that but???

THe hose doesn't eaplain the #4 misfire code.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have rebuilt engines on both a 94 escort and a 93 Aerostar, so I've been pretty deep intio engines before, but this one is driving me nuts!

I get a Miss on Cyl #2

I get an intermiten miss on cyl #2 .
This is what I was told could be a drip of colant into the cyl causing the miss.
To use only Motorcraft wires & keep them seperated & not crossed.
( I did this today & have not gotten a miss after I did this today )
Pull the plug that is missing it should be cleaner than the rest due to a colant leak ????
OK my top hose was leaking I did not see it because the fan was blowing the drops. Look for green stains on your metal parts.
To get the idle up I glued a .010 piece of metal on the throttle stop plate under the non adjustable idel screw.
These cars are not know for bad heads they usually run 170K before they have issues.
These cars do have problems with the coil packs they go bad all the time this might be either your or my problem.
I do have a check engine light Idel Control Over Speed that I will look at.
How about bad fuel or a fuel filter change that is my next step.
1998 63K keep in touch if you find a solution ( [email protected] ) Phil

I have the coilpack on my list of suspects, but that doesn't explain the coolant loss or the steam. ( I could have two different problems) Already checked for the plug condition, clean due to steam, and #4 is actually the
not as clean as the rest. if it was a bad fuel filter, it would miss, or lose power on a load all the time. 9At least that has been my experience.

Not 100%

Hey got up in the AM turned on car looked at tail pipe nothing unsual coming out the exhaust ran it for 1 min all ok pulled plug # 2 it looked perfect . I drove my car 30 miles round trip approx 16 miles in got a brief stumble and then another at around 22 miles got back to my house & it was running rough pulled #2 wire off of coil & I hear & see great spark gave it gas by moving throttle under hood car still running rough pulled fuel injector connection & reseated it moved injector side to side & car running fine again ????? Checked coolant none used. A while ago I looked at a used ford Tauras with my brother inlaw it started & drove 100% approx 5 min into test drive steam was poring out from under hood drove back to the guy he said it always does that & all he would do is add coolant after his trips it was coming from passanger side of car & it was external looked like between block & head. You know there is a product that seals head gasket leakes from the inside just look up that product on line.
