I'm a bit of a newb, so bear with me here.

Noticed yesterday when starting up my '93 Escort LX hatchback that it made a loud roaring noise/sound immediately upon starting, almost as if it was a car running without a muffler; the loud hum continued as I sat there in park. As I press down on the accelerator, there are even louder roars. Way louder than "normal" sounds of just a few days ago. This happens no matter the current gear I'm in.

Notably, however, there is an additional rattling noise upon switching into reverse or drive, which occurs only while the car is idling in reverse or drive, not in park or neutral. Likely different from the first issue.

Kinda came out of nowhere yesterday; no indication what could've caused this. Any ideas what exactly I need to take a look at here?

Sounds like the exhaust pipe and/or muffler has a hole in it or is burned completely through. The rattling is probably movement of the burned out exhaust hitting something underneath the car.

Good thinking, all. I checked it out under the car and sure enough, looks like one end of the flex pipe has cracked and is no longer properly affixed, on the side heading toward the catalytic converter.

Any idea how much $$$ am I looking at here, ballpark figure, to have that welded back on or replaced or whatever? Thanks.

You can find pretty cheap flex pipes on Ebay, just take some measurements of your's. I think when I fixed that on my car, about 5 years ago, it cost about $40-50 to get the part from Ebay and get someone to cut the old one off and weld in the new one.

It cost me $120 to get a new flex piece welded in. they did it while I waited.
 Where did you go? I had a complete 2.25" exhaust done for $75 + muffler.

Well, I got a new flex pipe welded on. All is good with the exhaust now.

Turns out the rattling when I'm idling in gear is actually the belt tensioner.

Yeah $120-150 is about the going rate here as well... my shop would charge about $125, most of which is labor. Heck, our minimum welding fee is $30.

Labor rates vary GREATLY depending on where you are... we charge $80/hour... the average in the St. Louis area is probably about $90-100. Get out in the country and you'll find shops charging as low as $25-30/hour.
