Low budget team in a low budget series will be pulling the motor out of our GT (1.8 )... Any suggestions for increasing HP? We race in the LeMons series so we really can't do too much without getting penalized.
Is a SAFC worth the money?

For more info on the car and series check out www.tajracing.com

Thanks!

safc is not worth the money

lets see, simple mods...

b-code airflow meter from an RX7 with a cone filter should help power at high rpms where you will spend most of your time. the B-code vaf comes from late 80's non turbo rx7's. you have to tune it a little bit there are instructions around here somewhere or on clubprotege.

you can get a spare exhaust cam, chop off the distributor drive, and install it on the intake side with a modified cam gear. check miata forums for detailed info on this... somewhere there is even a pattern you can download and print for redrilling the alignment pin hole in your cam gear.

94+ EGT's came with tubular header manifolds from the factory. its never been proven but that should give you a LITTLE more power over your cast manifold.

search around for info on how to "cut" your intake manifold. there are restrictions in there that will give you more midrange and top end power if you take them out.

thats all i can think of right now

Will there be a change in engine pitch or tone if we do the cam swap? We really need this thing to sound stock at an idle speed during tech inspection.

There's really no obvious change in idle/noise doing the exhaust cam, but we found about 6hp on the dyno with these mods---also delete your power steering---there's instructions on here as well on how to do that. We run up to a 225x45x15 in the front without power steering for endurance racing and have no issues. Obviously remove the cat/muffler and put on a glasspak if you have no noise restrictions.

If you've got a ton of time you could cut the manifold inside like Jon suggested or even swap out to a kia manifold---We did an exhaust cam, RX7 afm, kia manifold/cut, pwr steering delete, a header with 2 1/4" exhaust to a glasspak, cone filter and got 126HP at the wheels with a little tuning...we also had an aluminum flywheel...

The lemons courses are pretty tight---I'd worry more about getting 3 degree of negative front camber with a little toe out and about 2 1/8 to 2 1/4 degrees negative in the rear. You should be able to slot the strut and the upper mounts to get close---this we'll make more of a difference in lap times than the engine mods above---good luck!

Edit-I just looked at your site and you guys look like you know what your doing and probably already have the negative camber---cool car!!!

Thanks for the tips!! Yeah we worked on the front end with the camber after our first race. Boy, what a difference that was...we were noticeably quicker in the turns! We also lowered the rear end a bit.
This time we found some cheap-o ebay coil-overs which I hope will last us one race plus we have to work on the motor to solve some issues we are having.
Will there be any reliability issues with the cam swap?

I am currently running a 95 EGT in the ITA SCCA class in the N.E. I am looking for some info on anyone using a standalone ECU in this type of application. What type and a tuner in the N.E. Also looking for the actual thread spec for the oil press sensor so I can install a dash mounted pressure gauge, tough to figure out.

Thanks for your help. You mentioned Dynos....I just dropped the ol girl off at a buddy's that will correct some engine issues and he ran it on his dyno. 96.4 HP!! I was shocked it was that high after 115K miles purely stock except for a cone filter. Our air/fuel mixure was all out of wack over 4k rpms so he said he's going to see if he can tune it a bit.

I know Lex here on the board offers a Megasquirt system (stand alone) for the Escort. JRally has run them in several cars and has had gotten great performance/durability from the megasquirt systems. Lex's system is plug and play now, so just mount it, fire it up with the base map and go to town...
