Hi,
I have a 91 escort 1.9l LX. It makes knocking sound. Is there a way to tell if it´s from the engine or from a leaky exhaust. The sound pitch seems to change with rpm. I also smell a bit of exhaust when I open the windows...

We change oil every 3000 miles or 3/4 months.

Is it like a knocking or pinging sound or is it like a clicking sound that´s very rapid? if it´s clicking then you need to put oil in your car. if it´s a knocking/pining sound then it´s just firing before TDC. :-(

sometimes just changing from 87 oct to 89 oct can imprve things. it helped things along very well for me..

could be detonation... if you engine runs too hot, or you´re pushing WOT at low rpms in too high of a gear, you´ll detonate like mad in the LX. Heat causes detonation.

Check out the spark plugs and get cooler running plugs. Run higher octane fuel (you really shouldn´t need to do this though- the 1.9L SEFI was designed to run on freakin poor as hell quality gasoline).. and of course check the timing. Preignition causes knocking.

If it´s a clicking sound then your valves and lifters may be damaged.

concerning the exhaust smell, lift your car and check for leaks, especially around interfaces inbetween things like the cat and the exhaust piping, and holes in pipes themselves. Stuff a rag in the tailpipe and check it over for leaks.

also check your air/fuel ratio.

Dear James,

You obviously have just the talent I´m looking for. ;-) Every time I take my ´scort in for work to be done, I have to describe the type of squeek, thump, ping, roar or fart it´s making. After the mechanicmen stop giggling with merth and pick themselves up off the floor - they still have no idea what on earth could be wrong.

Could you, or anyone else around here with nothing better to do, compile a dictionary of "Sick ´Scort Sounds?" I would be most grateful. :-?
