I'm looking for some solid info on manual tranny compatibility for my 1991 Escort GT with 1.8L DOHC. I've heard that there a few tranny's from various years/models that are compatible: MX-3, MX-6, Probe, Protege from what I've heard. If anyone has a cross-reference list of models/years for the tranny's that would be great. I scattered my 3rd tranny a few days ago and I'd like to get another, preferably a better one if possible.

Well, although it's perhaps not the most "solid" info, I happen to own a '91 EGT as well as a '94 PGT. I did a clutch flywheel swap on the Probe last Dec. and am currently in the process of dropping a new longblock into the escort. I was surprised to see that the Tranny in the 'scort is the same one as in my V6 Probe. This means that any 2nd gen Probe gt (93-97) tranny should fit. The base Probe's had a 2.0L DOHC I-4 similair to our 1.8 and it would not surprise me if those too use the same trans. The engine code of the Probe V6 is KL03 and a J-spec is the KLZE. There are a few other Mazda V6 engines that would likely take the same trans as well. Those are the 1.8L V6, yes V6, from the MX3, and then the same KL03 can be found in the MX6 of course, but also the 626 and the later Millenia. Again, both the MX6 and 626 in the 93+ years had that same 2.0L engine as well. All would have the exact same trans though, so I am afraid none would be any better than what you've got now.
That trans is notorious for breaking on people, especially with our higher torque & power ratings in the V6's, not to mention the heavier vehicles they are forced to move along.
The only problem I foresee is the speedometer connection, which in EGT's is of course a mechanical (cable) type where the Probes have an electrical (digital) relay at the trans. There, I would assume it is just a differnece at the trans and that part would perhaps be interchangable from the existing trans that you have.
Sorry, after writing all this, I realize I am really not that helpful at all!
Probably just more confusing, but at least that may help you broaden your search. You might want to search on ProbeTalk.com. the forums, where there are some serious Mazda-Ford gurus, who unlike me might have more definite answers for you.
