Check to make sure the inertia switch hasn't got tripped. if it hasn't try turning the key to the on position while listening for a hum frm the fuel pump. If you don't hear a humming that lasts for about 1-2 seconds your fuel pump has probably gone out. To replace it you'll have to drop the fuel tank and remove it from the opening in the top of the tank.

How do you check the inertia switch ?

If it is like my '88 the inertia switch is located on the left side in the trunk behind a black rubber plug. Take the plug out and feel around inside the hole and you'll feel the switch. On top of the switch is a button, if it is popped up the inertia switch has got tripped. Just push it back down which resets the switch and it should start, but if the button is still down then the switch was not tripped. It's not likely it has got tripped unless someone has hit the car, you have hit something or you've hit a large pot hole that gave the switch a hard jar.

Yeah, that's right I don't think they started fuel injection till '87. Does it have an electric fuel pump or mechanical? I too would be leaning toward the fuel pump.
Pretty sure its mechanical. The fuel line is dry to the inline fuel
filter so am thinkin it must be pump. There is a fusable link to
the fuel pump, but only on 1.9 EFI high output motor which this
is not.

Not sure why the 86 manual has both reference charts to both
EFI hi output motor and carbureted model both 1.9 litre. I
didnt think EFI motor came until 87 ?

Gotta be fuel pump..dont know what else there is ?

If it's got a carb, it's got a mechanical fuel pump that runs off a lobe on the camshaft. If it's not pumping, check for a cracked line, a leaking rubber line, maybe a clog in the pickup tube in the tank, or (most likely) a cracked diaphragm in the actual pump. The pump itself is on the intake side of the head, by the distributor end. Take it off, and see how the pump diaphragm looks. If you prefer, an aftermarket electric pump (6-8 psi) can be used if it flows enough fuel.

Yeah based on what I've been seeing in parts store inventories, lately, we're about to be in hurt city as far as finding replacement parts for our 1st gen Escorts. Within another year or two it's going to get tough.

Well guys I put the car on ramps checked the fuel lines from
the tank forward. No leaks or damage I could see.

Went and got a fuel pump like 20 bucks then degreased the
breather tray and a few other parts to soak while I installed
the pump. Also cleaned the carb out some.

Took a few tries but she fired up,and running fine. Then I
changed the oil and filter also so good to go for a while LOL. :D

Appreciate replies this a great forum I just hope parts dont
become obsolete soon. I do know someone who offered
me a escort so if he hasnt junked it yet I know where my
parts might come from.
